Job summary

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a doctor, from F3 onwards, who may be looking to expand paediatric knowledge, with an aim to working within Paediatrics or General practice, who wishes to work in a large District General Hospital setting, acting as member of a team providing General and acute Paediatric and Neonatal care within the Department of Paediatrics.

The post arises to work alongside the Tier 1 doctors, who are GP registrars and Foundation Y2 doctors as well as 4 Paediatric trainees.

We are a busy, dynamic Department and we value learning. We are friendly and supportive with a particularly strong track record of supporting LED doctor's both during service as well as with longer term development.

We are able to offer some flexibility around rotas to suit the requirements of the candidates, as long as a service commitment is provided.

  • Assisting in the jaundice clinic

The responsibilities of the LAS Trainee in General Paediatrics will include:

  • Reviewing children referred by our paediatric ED department
  • Medical supervision of Day Case treatments and investigations eg. Blood transfusion, food challenges, infusions
  • Co-ordination of care of children admitted to HDU and the children's ward
  • Ensuring timely communication with primary care when children are discharged
  • Participation in the tier 1 on-call rota
  • Participation in post-take handover following a night on-call

The post holder will be encouraged and supported to develop other areas of expertise which might be a clinical service or a technical skill.

About us

The GRH redevelopment scheme opened in November 2004 to include the new purpose-built Children's Centre including a spacious Children's outpatients, a 4-bed high dependency unit, a dedicated oncology unit with isolation cubicles and a designated area for teenagers. Both medical and paediatric surgical admissions are admitted to the ward.

We have a designated paediatric assessment unit that is operational 24hours per day. We work closely with our colleagues in primary care and the emergency department.

We operate a consultant 'week on take' covering the ward and PAU separately. During this week all other fixed commitments are cancelled. This has consolidated a consultant led service, and has contributed to shortened lengths of stay, ensured appropriate admissions and resulted in improved training and supervision of trainees. There is a consultant resident on site between 09:00 and 22:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 21:00 at weekends.

Children requiring intensive care are transferred initially to the adult intensive care unit in the main hospital. Following initial assessment on ITU and discussion with the regional transport team (WATCh) and Bristol Children's PICU, some children with short term Level 2 requirements would stay in Gloucester, but all children with complex Level 2 or with Level 3 conditions are always transferred to a PICU.
