Job summary

This post is a fixed-term appointment with a view to starting immediately.The appointee will have experience of working independently. Ideally they will have developed a subspecialist interest, yet retaining a broad range of skills across the generality of Trauma & Orthopaedics. We are keen to appoint someone with significant experience in trauma surgery and experience of fellowship or frame surgery would be encouraged. They will also be able to demonstrate experience within education or management. They will be expected to take on roles within the department to support the development of service.The post holder will work with colleagues to provide services across the county including out patient clinics and emergency referrals.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to provide a new Specialist Doctor post within the Trust's Trauma & Orthopaedic service.The appointee will have experience of working independently. They will be expected to take on roles within the department to support the development of service.The post holder will work with colleagues to provide services across the county including out patient clinics and emergency referrals.Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-o To ensure the provision of a first class clinical serviceo To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialtyo To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriateo To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policieso To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Division's services planso To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Surgery Division or the Trust

Job responsibilities

Essential qualifications:- Full General Medical Council registration a licence to practise- MBBS or equivalent- FRCS (Orth) or equivalent experience

Desirable qualifications:-Higher degree- Teaching qualification-ATLS Provider

Essential clinical experience:- Ability to take independent responsibility for clinical care of patients- Ability to offer an advanced clinical opinion on a range of both elective and emergency problems in trauma surgery- Validated logbook indicating adequate and appropriate level of specialist orthopaedic surgical operative experience

Desirable clinical experience:- Experience in advanced elective and trauma orthopaedic surgery- Expertise in elective and trauma surgery and at least 6 months experience in a specialist unit or equivalent.- Interest in frame trauma surgery

Essential audit and evidence-based practice:- Experience in devising, conducting and applying audit results

Desirable audit and evidence-based practice:- Training in evidence-based practice

Essential Management & Administrative skills:- Willing and able to work with colleagues in management, nursing and other specialities

Desirable Management & Administrative skills:- Experience of clinical governance

Essential experience:- To ensure the delivery of a high quality, safe and reliable service- Familiar with clinical governance- A willingness to accept responsibility and provide leadership- Awareness of current relevant developments within the NHS- Determination to play a full part in the future development of the service

Desirable experience:- Experience of protocol / pathway development and change management

Essential teaching experience:- Must have an interest in teaching all grades of hospital and professional staff

Desirable teaching experience:- Practical experience in teaching posts- Presentational skills- Undergraduate and post graduate teaching experience

Essential research experience:- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

Desirable research experience:- Research relevant to orthopaedics, experience of leading research projects/ supervising others including production of proposals and ethical approval- Publications in refereed journals- Presentations at national and international level

Essential personal attributes:- Flexibility and willingness to share clinical responsibility for patients- Conscientiousness to ensure careful transfer of care- Excellent interpersonal skills- Ability to communicate effectively with clinical, academic and managerial colleagues- Able to work co-operatively as a team member & independently- Ability to self-motivate

Desirable personal attributes:- Ability to think laterally.
