Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Education Site Director for Three Counties Medical School

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

The Medical School will open its doors in September 2023 for its first cohort of graduate entry MBChB medical students. A key part of the curriculum is clinical placements in the local health community. We are seeking to employ an Education Site Director.

The main purpose of the role is to act as the interface between Gloucestershire Hospitals NHSFT [GHT] and the University of Worcester Three Counties Medical School [TCMS] and be responsible for the delivery and quality of clinical education and training to medical students whilst on clinical placement.

At the Founding stage of the Medical School, the role holder will be responsible for working with colleagues both in GHT and the TCMS to plan suitable student placements ready for the arrival of the first cohort of medical students for the MBChB Programme in September 2023. The Education Site Directors will then be responsible for continuing to oversee whilst developing the placements, and supervise students once they are on site.

Main duties of the job

The role holder will continue in their substantive clinical role with their GHT, and it is envisaged that their job plan will be reviewed to allocate time within their contractual hours to perform the role. Whilst these are new roles for TCMS, GHT has experience of providing similar support for students from other Medical Schools.

The role is designated for an initial 12 months / academic year 2023/24, after which it will be reviewed as part of on-going job planning and appraisal structure to ensure it is meeting the needs of the medical students, the GHT and the Medical School.

The role holder will report, for this aspect of their role, to the Associate Medical Director for Leadership and Development in the Trust.

Job responsibilities

Main duties and responsibilities

The role will include the following duties and responsibilities. It is anticipated that the role will evolve as the programme rolls out from Phase 1 to Phase 2 and student numbers increase when further years of students are recruited.

To represent GHT in the delivery of clinical education and training placements to TCMS medical students at University and Medical School meetings.

To act as the interface between GHT and the University, helping to balance the potentially conflicting needs of education and NHS service provision.

To understand the needs of the TCMS curriculum and, in close liaison with the Phase 2 Lead (who is responsible for placements), the TCMS Placement Administration Team and NHS colleagues, to develop the clinical placements which meet the needs of the TCMS curriculum in both number and quality.

To ensure clinical placements are developed within a timeframe that meets the curriculum needs.

To support their NHS colleague clinical supervisors and play a part, within the auspices of the Medical School, in their professional development.

To take steps to ensure that GHT provides a learning environment to support the students on placement.

To ensure adequate support systems within GHT are available to students, and that students are aware of how to raise concerns, and get help/assistance as required.

To ensure delivery of the relevant aspects of the Memorandum of Understanding and Service Level Agreements as applicable to GHT relating to student placements.

To work with the TCMS Placement Administration Team to ensure that GHT has administrative and support systems in place to facilitate the clinical attachment timetable.

To advise GHT on the requirements for educational facilities and resources to ensure they are adequate for TCMS requirements.

To act as a member of the Three Counties Education Site Directors Liaison Group.

To work closely with those responsible for postgraduate medical education and non-medical professional development within GHTT and the University to develop an integrated approach to education training in clinical areas, including working with GHTs Education and Development Teams to maximise opportunities for inter-professional working.

To liaise with those responsible for undergraduate teaching programmes for students from other Medical Schools on placement at GHT, ensuring that no one programme is disadvantaged, and to identify any opportunities for enhancement.

To work with GHT to support the identification of placements and the staff who will be acting as clinical supervisors for the students on placement [this will be led by the specific requirements and processes of that NHS organisation in managing student placements].

To identify any training needs that the clinical supervisors may have to ensure they are supported by GHT and to provide ongoing support, together with staff from the Medical School to clinical supervisors in their teaching and assessment roles. This may involve formal sessions relating to the curriculum and assessment as well as informal support.

To ensure that concerns raised by students informally and formally are properly managed through GHT and University processes, so that lessons are learned and disseminated for the future. To support clinical supervisors through the University processes for managing concerns raised by its students or about its students from a university perspective.

To collaborate with the TCMS Phase 2 Lead and the Quality Lead to ensure that the quality of the placements meets the requirements of the Regulator and the University, advising on both the development and quality monitoring of clinical placements.
