Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
Registered Nurse/ODP with the NMC/ HCPC holding a extensive years post registration experience in an acute clinical setting
Experience of deputising for senior department staff
Evidence of delegation and personal time management skills
Able to demonstrate expert clinical competence in a surgical environment with highly developed specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience
Evidence of teaching and assessing experience and an appropriate qualification with a commitment to the ongoing personal development and that of their team
Possess a high level of awareness and understanding of contemporary issues in surgery and post-anaesthetic care and in the wider health and nursing environment, keeping evidence of continuing professional development
Experience of motivating staff and team building, with proven analytical skills and staff development through appraisal and performance management
Developed/Enhanced IT skills
Experience as a lead resource for disseminating clinical skills and knowledge
Understanding and experience of implementing research based practice
Recognised management course or equivalent level of competence gained through experience

Key Result Areas
Development of a strategic plan for clinical education and staff development for theatre staff as required, combining regular reviews to assess progression of the plan ensuring any adjustments needed are made in a timely fashion
Manage the team, ensuring protocols, policies and procedures are adhered to and provide a service to the agreed standard which meets organisational and national targets
Participate in audit and research to develop research based practices
Ensuring that your staff assess and define patient needs and through the training that they do ensure that the level of care they advocate is evidence based
Communicate effectively throughout the multidisciplinary team disseminating contentious and delicate information appropriately and in a timely manner
Where appropriate administer medication and treatment within Procedure for Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medication Guidelines
Assist the clinical team managers to support mentorship for all students assigned to their team and on continuing education for their clinical staff. Where necessary work collaboratively to provide clinical environments that are conducive to learning for students, new and existing staff
Analyse difficult situations ensuring staff and patients safety under the 1974 Health and Safety Act
Undertake judgements involving highly complex facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation and comparisons of a range of options
Ensure own and staffs ability to input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer based systems. Ensure maintenance of accurate and contemporaneous records of all types
Manage pay and non-pay budgets for the team seeking the support of the Matron as required
Order equipment within the agreed budgetary limit
Ensure a standardised approach to training, disciplinary and performance issues is taken for your team
Ensure all team staff have an annual personal development plan which is implemented within available resources. Identify key staff to include in succession planning
As needed, participate in the out of hours service at or Cheltenham General Hospital or, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital working without supervision, following a period of induction, training and assessment
Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters
In conjunction with their manager, identify personal training needs, participating in clinical audit and quality projects which contribute to the departmental plans and objectives
Report incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, and injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist in the investigation of incidents as required
Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with senior management
Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and ensure the professionalism of its staff is portrayed
Contribute to the development and achievement of the Trusts corporate agenda and to the development, implementation and evaluation of Trust wide policies and procedures, ensuring staff have access to them and work within a safe and robust framework. Implement policies within the unit and propose policy or service changes which impact beyond their own area of activity
Contribute to audit programmes for the improvement of the quality of care. Assist in the development of the use of research, maintaining a system whereby all staff have the ability to critically appraise literature and transfer findings into practice. Encourage the development of a supportive infrastructure at clinical level for nursing research and development, promoting dissemination of and participation in nursing research
Assist in leading the nursing contribution for GHNHSFT Theatres, developing Trust objectives and business plans including the implementation and achievement of these. Assist in planning and organising a broad range of complex activities and programmes, some of which are on-going, which require the formulation and adjustment of plans or strategies.
Managerial Role
To act as a positive role model at all times, deputising for the Deputy Matron/Matron/Senior Matron as required
Ensuring the team budget is adhered to at all times and advise procurement of potential savings where appropriate
Ensure a lean methodology is utilised with regards to stock ordering and stock holding
Maintain high visibility within the clinical area ensuring that patients, staff, and the multi-disciplinary team are secure at all times, and that access to the team area and the wider department remain restricted and secure
Ensure that all issues relating to the implementation of patient quality and safety are addressed/ monitored
Know where and how to access all policies and procedures and adhere to them. Be proactive in ensuring that policies are up to date and introducing new polices or standard operating procedures in a timely manner as and when required
Ensure that all new staff are successfully inducted into the team and are provided with the relevant induction material and a named member of staff to assist them
Ensure that all staff appraisals are conducted in a timely manner and that all have focus on the development of the staff member
Ensure that there is a robust sickness management process that is observed for team members
To keep the Matron or nominated deputy/co-ordinator informed of significant changes in the day to day operational status of the team
To participate in regular meetings within the department and wider trust including both internal and external Team Managers meetings
