Job summary

We are seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual who acts as a role model and has strong leadership skills to direct our Education and Training function for staff across our sites. We are committed to professional and personal development of our team enabling all staff to fulfil their potential and deliver our ambitions.

Applications are invited from Allied Health Professionals (AHP) or nurses with a passion for clinical education and practice development with the drive to ensure that all the member of our teams experience is of high quality, safe, and fit for purpose support.

You will support and coordinate the development of Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants and both pre and post registration nursing/ODP students by arranging educational activities and assessments of learning within the department.

This role will develop training programmes to standardise practice and ensure that quality is at the centre of everything we do for our patients and to support the wider multidisciplinary team.

The post holder must have the ability to work as part of a team as well as being able to work autonomously. The role requires an ability to act as an expert resource, provider and role model within clinical areas with a flexible and adaptable approach, responding to the demands within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality clinical care both directly as necessary, and through the effective management and professional leadership of the Theatre Practice Development Team (PD Team), in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council/Health Care Professions Council and Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust

Introduce a development programme for theatre staff of all bands.

To be responsible for the management of all learners based in theatres across site and the maintenance of an up to date register.

To provide visible, accessible and authoritative leadership to staff, acting as an expert role model to ensure the excellence and effectiveness of all training and education provided by maintaining a strong presence within the team as required

To inspire, motivate and empower others to ensure highly specialised clinical competence and standards are developed and maintained and that staff retention is a major factor in strategic planning

To manage the ongoing staff recruitment strategy and processes

Work in conjunction with the Theatre QI and Project Lead to support clinical audits by implementing training which supports audit findings

To ensure PD staff plan and prepare all scheduled training in advance to maximise availability of clinical staff and thereby optimise effectiveness

To comply at all times with the NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct

Possess a high level of awareness and understanding of contemporary issues in surgery and post-anaesthetic care and in the wider health and nursing environment, keeping evidence of continuing professional development

Experience of motivating staff and team building, with proven analytical skills and staff development through appraisal and performance management

Key Result Areas

Development of a strategic plan for clinical education and staff development for theatre staff as required, combining regular reviews to assess progression of the plan ensuring any adjustments needed are made in a timely fashion

Manage the team, ensuring protocols, policies and procedures are adhered to and provide a service to the agreed standard which meets organisational and national targets

Participate in audit and research to develop research based practices

Ensuring that your staff assess and define patient needs and through the training that they do ensure that the level of care they advocate is evidence based

Communicate effectively throughout the multidisciplinary team disseminating contentious and delicate information appropriately and in a timely manner

Where appropriate administer medication and treatment within Procedure for Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medication Guidelines

Analyse difficult situations ensuring staff and patients safety under the 1974 Health and Safety Act

Undertake judgements involving highly complex facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation and comparisons of a range of options

Ensure own and staffs ability to input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer based systems. Ensure maintenance of accurate and contemporaneous records of all types

Manage pay and non-pay budgets for the team seeking the support of the Matron as required

Order equipment within the agreed budgetary limit

Ensure a standardised approach to training, disciplinary and performance issues is taken for your team

Ensure all team staff have an annual personal development plan which is implemented within available resources. Identify key staff to include in succession planning

As needed, participate in the out of hours service at or Cheltenham General Hospital or, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital working without supervision, following a period of induction, training and assessment

Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters

In conjunction with their manager, identify personal training needs, participating in clinical audit and quality projects which contribute to the departmental plans and objectives

Report incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, and injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist in the investigation of incidents as required

Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with senior management

Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and ensure the professionalism of its staff is portrayed

Contribute to the development and achievement of the Trusts corporate agenda and to the development, implementation and evaluation of Trust wide policies and procedures, ensuring staff have access to them and work within a safe and robust framework.
