The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Paediatric Surgeon

The closing date is 05 April 2026

Job summary

We are delighted to present an opportunity for TWO consultant paediatric surgeons to join our team to complete a full complement of 8 consultants. You will join a team providing comprehensive tertiary paediatric surgical services to the Northern Region. On-call emergency cover will be shared with colleagues (1:8). The on-call week is split into 4:3 as Monday-Thursday and Friday-Sunday. The on-call is 24 hours and is non-resident out of hours. Both surgeons will additionally be expected to be part of a separate oesophageal atresia rota (1:4). This will attract a further 3% on call supplement (making a total on call supplement of 8%). Both surgeons will replace existing colleagues to provide an all-day outreach service (clinic and theatre) once every 6 weeks to a neighbouring district general hospital.

Main duties of the job

Post 1: Lower GI area of interest

The individual will be expected to manage all paediatric colorectal conditions from congenital neonatal diagnoses to teenage inflammatory bowel disease. There is an expectation for familiarity with minimally invasive techniques. They will work closely alongside our existing colorectal surgeon(s). The work will include multidisciplinary meetings with the gastroenterologists; a quarterly cloaca clinic and training of a Royal College approved paediatric colorectal fellow.

Post 2: Upper GI and thoracic area of interest with flexible oncology support

Upper GI: The appointee will work with our existing upper GI surgeon to provide a comprehensive cover to upper GI pathology. There is an expectation of familiarity with minimally invasive techniques and upper GI endoscopy.

Thoracic: We are aiming to develop a thoracic component to our service to manage empyema and congenital lung malformations. This service is currently provided by the cardiothoracic service in our Trust. Alongside an existing colleague, we are looking for a motivated colleague to spearhead the development of this service.

Oncology: The appointee will work flexibly alongside existing oncology surgeon(s). They will form part of the multi-disciplinary oncology service. There is an expectation to be actively involved in the vascular access lists.
