The closing date is 09 April 2026

Job summary

Our newly expanded Senior Clinical Fellow programme includes the option of full time Emergency Medicine posts as well as 80:20 split posts between Emergency Medicine and a specialist interest.

Do you want to experience the excitement of seeing the full scope of emergency presentations in one of only 12 Emergency Departments designated as an Adult and Paediatric Major Trauma Centre? Are you looking to continue to develop a career in emergency medicine under the supervision of a team of consultants who have consistently delivered excellent training at all levels? Do you want to be part of a highly supportive and friendly team and work in a fast paced, high intensity environment?

We are consistently one of the top Trusts regionally for performance against the 4-hour standard, delivered by focussing on high quality patient care throughout the organisation. In 2019, we won the inaugural Newcastle Hospitals Clinical Team of the Year Award. This combination of high performance, varied case mix and close team working create a unique environment to support your professional development and enjoyment of your job. We have an excellent track record of helping our trust doctors build portfolios which rank very highly in national recruitment and have experience of progressing senior doctors through the CESR route to Consultant level.

Main duties of the job

Our Senior Clinical Fellow programme includes posts with the exciting opportunity to have 20% of time dedicated to a specialist interest. The specialist interest posts include sports & exercise medicine, pre-hospital emergency medicine, clinical research, and point of care ultrasound. See more information below.

Whilst working in Emergency Medicine, you will join a team of 29 consultants, 3 specialty doctors, 18 senior resident and higher specialty trainee doctors, 28 other resident doctors, 9 ACPs and over 100 nurses working in the Emergency Department. This post involves a full shift system, involving nights and weekend work. Your primary responsibility will include delivering care to the full spectrum of patients that attend the emergency department and on shift clinical supervision of junior members of the team. You will be a key component of the trauma team and will have the chance to act as the Trauma Team Leader (with supervision). You will use and develop your emergency care skills to resuscitate the most critically unwell patients. Senior clinical fellows in the Emergency Department are supported by resident on-call ED Consultants 24/7.
