Job summary
This specialist role is integral to delivering high quality, safe, and person centred mechanical ventilation at home, in line with NHS policy, professional standards, and national clinical guidance. The post holder will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of highly specialist programmes of care for patients requiring long term ventilatory support, ensuring interventions are evidence based and reflect NICE, NHS England, and local organisational policies.
Acting as the clinical expert within the home ventilation service, the post holder provides advanced specialist advice on complex care issues and supports the development of robust, clinically effective protocols and guidelines. They will lead multidisciplinary initiatives to standardise practice, strengthen governance, and ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and safeguarding requirements.
The role includes comprehensive assessment of patients, initiation and adaptation of ventilatory treatments, and ordering and interpreting clinical investigations within agreed NHS governance frameworks. The post holder will make appropriate referrals to multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure integrated, seamless care across community, acute, and regional networks.

Main duties of the job
A key responsibility is driving quality improvement by benchmarking services against national and international standards, identifying gaps, and implementing changes to enhance safety, outcomes, and patient experience. They will contribute to the development of organisational and legal frameworks that enable safe, ethical delivery of home mechanical ventilation, demonstrating the ability to make clinically justified therapeutic decision that support NHS priorities for personalised care.
The post holder will champion patient, carer, and public involvement in service design, ensuring services are equitable, accessible, and responsive. They will also provide expert support to colleagues and lead organisational efforts to monitor, review, and improve clinical standards across the service.
The NMAHP Consultant for Home Mechanical Ventilation will act as the clinical expert for the service, providing advanced and highly specialist leadership in the assessment, management, and ongoing support of patients requiring long term mechanical ventilation in their own homes.
