This post is suitable for a trainee with knowledge and experience of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology care as well as having a solid grounding in Acute Paediatric Medicine. A comprehensive training programme is available within this post which is equivalent to the training delivered through the UK National Grid training programme to achieve Specialty Certification.
Main duties of the job
Newcastle Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology Unit is one of 22 tertiary Paediatric/ Adolescent Oncology Units (Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group units) in the United Kingdom.
Almost 100% of children under the age of 15 years diagnosed with a malignancy in the northern part of the Northern Region are referred to the unit.
The unit has approximately 80 new patients per annum under the age of 15 and about 30 new patients over the age of 15 are referred to the Teenage Cancer Unit for treatment.
Most patients are entered into national and international protocols of treatment and the consultant members of the Unit are all active members of the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group, Medical Research Council Working Party and the International Society for Paediatric Oncology. Over 1000 children are now either on treatment or on long term follow up. Children's services in Newcastle have been co-located in the newly built Great North Children's Hospital since 2010. This purpose built facility provides primary services for children in Newcastle and secondary, tertiary services for the surrounding region.

The post will include the responsibility and supervision of children (both in-patient, day case and out-patient) with leukaemia, solid tumours and adolescents with malignancies. The postholder will rotate through three months blocks as appropriate with special responsibility for patients divided into the following groups.
Children teenagers and adolescents with extracranial solid tumours
Teenagers and adolescents with extracranial solid tumours
Young people with brain tumours
Young People leading up to and following Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation and Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cell therapy
The care of children receiving conditioning and delivery of stem cell transplantation.
The post holder will gain experience in the clinical management of young people with a comprehensive range malignancies and haematological disorders.

- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Comprehensive basic Paediatric internship training
- Greater than 18 months middle grade Paediatric Oncology experience at a tertiary centre
- Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
Clinical Skills and Knowledge

- Good history & examination skills.
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Image interpretation relevant to practice.
