Job summary

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for dynamic, engaging and committed resident doctors to join our team in Critical Care Medicine.

This post (ST1-2 equivalent) in Critical Care Medicine will be based in Critical Care across Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post is available from February 2026 for 6-12 months.

Note this post is critical care only (no anaesthesia placements). The post is suitable for applicants who have completed foundation training (or equivalent) and possess previous paid clinical experience within the NHS (clinical observerships/placements do not qualify as NHS clinical experience). The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST1-2 level.

GMC registration with a full license to practice is required: this post is not suitable for MTI programme sponsorship. Previous paid NHS experience is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take part in a full shift rota, along with other trainees, which provides 24-hour care for patients including weekends and night shifts.

This includes:

  • Immediate responsibility for care of critical care patients
  • Responsible for the admission and discharge of patients
  • Liaising with other departments and specialties as appropriate
  • Maintaining inpatient record
  • Ordering routine and emergency investigations and receiving and reviewing their results
  • Managing routine and unexpected problems on the critical care unit as they arise
  • Reviewing and admitting new admissions and referrals from both the emergency department and wards
  • Transfer of patient to radiology etc. as appropriate
  • Compliance with trust and departmental protocols and guidelines

Teaching:

  • The department has a strong teaching commitment to junior doctors. There is both formal and informal training as well as educational supervision and guidance for the postholders provided in each attachment.
  • Formal study-leave to attend relevant regional and national courses, (allocation the same as regional trainees) with reimbursement of expenses (according to Trust policy and up to the annual leave limit) also provided.

A number of educational sessions are provided, there is also access to the departmental, Trust and regional teaching and courses, such as preparation for FRCA and FFICM examinations. Critical Care units run weekly formal teaching as well as journal clubs, exam practise, self-directed learning and practical procedure teaching. The opportunity exists for the post holder to attend educational sessions within other departments of the hospital.
