Job summary
This is an exciting and challenging role to be based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care - North Cumbria (NCCC-NC) and at the Henderson Suite within Whitehaven Hospital. The Centre in Carlisle is purpose built for the provision of cancer treatment, including Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, at the Henderson Suite we provide Chemotherapy. One of the benefits we are able to provide our patients with is access to complementary therapies - funded by Newcastle Hospitals Charity, currently with funding for 3 years.
We are looking for an experienced therapist with established skills to lead the service in Cumbria, the right person will be able to provide high quality, evidence based complementary therapies for patients who visit the Centre and who would benefit from the treatments you can offer.

Main duties of the job
The right candidate will be sensitive and caring with good listening and communication skills, they will be able to use their assessment skills and techniques to provide complementary therapy intervention appropriate to the patients condition, their cancer and its treatment. You will need to be able to provide and receive complex and sensitive patient information to and from the wider multidisciplinary team.
You will manage your own caseload with support from the wider team, and will be able to work without supervision. You will need to liaise with the nursing/medical teams to establish which patients are appropriate for input of complementary therapies.
You will be required to access and input into NHS Patient systems to ensure continuity of care is provided and that comprehensive patient treatment records are kept.
It is possible that future growth of the service would require you to take on the role of team lead
This role can be physically demanding requiring you to stand, sit and walk with a trolley containing therapy items, and potential moving and handling of patients as part of their therapy treatment

The role will require you to work independently to provide a full complementary therapy service for the patients in NCCC-NC this will potentially include the following therapies:
AromatherapyReflexologyMassage (including light touch massage)Acupuncture
There is requirement that therapies are provided at NCCC-NC and at the Henderson Suite in Whitehaven so the ability to travel to both sites is required.
Deliver complementary therapies in accordance with NHS policies, infection control standards, and patient safety guidelines.
You will need to be able to work closely with the nursing and medical teams to identify patients who would benefit from the services provided
The right candidate will be able to cope well under potentially emotional circumstances, remaining calm, caring and professional at all times, you will be able to communicate effectively and sensitively and have an understanding of the complex needs of patients undergoing cancer treatments.
The role will require you to be in contact with patients, their families and a wide range of medical professionals involved in their care. There may be times where this is distressing or where there are barriers to communication
There will be a requirement to access and update patient records accurately, documenting consent for treatments, treatments provided and any other relevant information you will also be required to communicate information to the wider medical teams so will require strong communication and IT skills. You will need to be highly organized and able to manage your own caseload of patients.
You would be expected to Promote patient education and wellbeing through holistic approaches.
