Job summary

The Medical Engineering Support Technician is responsible for the day-to-day functionality, calibration, and electrical safety of a range of often complex and technologically advanced medical electronic devices used in an acute hospital environment requiring an in-depth knowledge of current medical device technology. Carry out routine maintenance, calibration, and electrical safety testing of medical/laboratory equipment.Provide day-to-day operational support within the EME Department.Train medical and technical staff in the use of medical devices. Work at any Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust site, department,customer, or patient premises.Carry out any other reasonable duties as required by the department or management to support the effective functioning of the team.

Main duties of the job

  • Asset new and loan items
  • Respond to request for help / assistance by senior technicians
  • PAT testing of equipment as required by departments
  • Test workshop equipment, functionally test or send away for service
  • PPM functionally test and repair or return, equipment as necessary
  • Regulators, test and service as required
  • Dopplers, check, repair or return
  • Perform or assist band 3 duties during absence or pressure of work
  • Any other tasks
  • Stock checks and audits conjunction with Band 3

  • ONC Electronics or equivalent qualification or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • NHS Biomedical Equipment Practice course (Btec)
  • Current driving licence

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven practical skills and knowledge of current medical device technology along with a sound understanding of mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical applications
  • A full understanding of the operation and calibration of diagnostic test equipment.
  • Computer use including database, word processing, internet, and email
  • Previous experience in an electronic or electrical related discipline.
  • Good levels of manual dexterity

Skills & Abilities

  • An ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff and suppliers under all conditions of urgency.
  • An appreciation of mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical applications
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to work within a team of technicians and readily accept supervision.
