Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic person with great communication skills and a keen interest in delivering first class cancer care administration to join our scheduling team in radiotherapy. Based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care - North Cumbria in Carlisle you will work closely with the scheduling team, managers and clinical staff on both sites (Freeman and Carlisle) to ensure patient referrals are processed accurately and appointments are scheduled according to our structured carepaths and protocols in line with cancer target dates. The radiotherapy service receives approximately 150 referrals per week and our schedulers are a crucial part of the team in delivering timely radiotherapy to patients across the North East and North Cumbria.

Main duties of the job
- Possess an excellent knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office systems, including word and excel and an ability to understand complex cancer referral pathways to schedule radiotherapy appointments and tasks into our specialised patient management systems. o A key feature of the post will be to act as the link between the patients, wards, consultants, planning, chemotherapy and treatment machines in organising the treatment schedule for each patient ensuring cancer targets are met.
- Possess a professional and courteous telephone manner, as you will be making calls to patients to inform them of their appointments and support them with queries about their referral as well as communicating with colleagues across the specialty teams, including other hospitals.
- To have a flexible approach and be able to manage a workload effectively to ensure that all daily tasks, including urgent referrals are achieved.
- Maintain awareness of service delivery developments and contribute to the implementation of change within the service.
- To participate in any aspect of the administration service within Radiotherapy as required.
- Contribute to the delivery of a consistently high standard of patient care as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

- To receive referrals and schedule patients for in-patient and out-patient radiotherapy for cancer.
- To provide co-ordination of the patient pathway. A key feature of the post will be to act as the link between the patients, oncology wards, consultants, planning department, chemotherapy outpatients, treatment machines and medical records in co-ordinating the treatment plan for each patient ensuring cancer targets arenot breached.
- To be part of a team responsible for ensuring waiting time targets are met, using analytical, judgement, influencing and persuasion skills within the multidisciplinary team environment.
- To allocate appropriate appointment slots for each stage of the treatment process, liaising with relevant staff as necessary.

Essential
- Educated to GCSE level, with GCSE Grade 4 or above in English or equivalent or relevant experience
- NVQ level 3 or equivalent or equivalent experience
- ECDL, Microsoft Office Specialist or equivalent experience
Desirable
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Mathematics and English or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Must have a familiarity with Hospital Information Management Systems such as PAS and of medical terminology
- Knowledge of NHS Waiting Times Directives
- Knowledge of Confidentiality
- Significant clerical experience in an administrative role in a NHS / health care environment
