Job summary

The Chaplaincy team help to provide support across the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; this is delivered in a multitude of ways including but not exclusively: Pastoral, Spiritual, Religious and practical ways.

The person appointed will work cross sites with other team members from the chaplaincy team to provide 24/7 365 cover to patients, staff and relatives both in the hospital settings and community services. This will include the leading and delivery of Christian acts of worship and sacramental provision across the Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Healthcare Chaplain to join our established, collaborative and supportive Chaplaincy Team, which is committed to providing high quality Spiritual and Religious Care to patients, visitors and staff in an ecumenical and multi-faith context.

As an experienced healthcare chaplain you will be able to demonstrate significant experience of working as a chaplain within a healthcare context.

Main duties of the job

The role includes:

  • working as part of Multi-disciplinary Teams across the breadth of specialist services delivered by the Trust in order to deliver gold standard patient centred care
  • offering Pastoral. Spiritual and Religious Care to patients, carers and staff on wards and in departments across the Trust including community services; must be authorised to lead Christian worship and administer the sacraments according to the rites of the Anglican or Free Church tradition (Member Churches of Churches Together)
  • working as part of the End of Life Team in providing gold standard end of life and bereavement care including facilitating chapel of rest appointments
  • involvement in teaching and research
  • delivery of the Helping Hands Stable of Care for Trust Staff

You will need:

  • excellent communication skills to easily engage with people from all kinds of backgrounds, including those of different religious traditions and those of no faith
  • to be pastorally sensitive and able to work within very distressing situations
  • to be able to work as part of a team
  • a deep personal spirituality and have the necessary resilience to work in a sometime stressful and distressing environment

All Chaplains work across the Trust with a base at either the Freeman Hospital or the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Informal visits / telephone conversations are welcomed and encouraged.
