Job summary

This locally employed doctor post (registrar equivalent) in critical care medicine is at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is available from 4th of February for 6-12 months. Note this post is critical care only (no formal anaesthesia placements). A minimum of 2 years post foundation clinical experience in ICM, anaesthesia or general medicine is required, including at least 3 months ICM and suitable advanced airway skills. The post is suitable for applicants who have completed core training in an ICM partner specialty (anaesthetics/internal medicine/emergency medicine) that would allow application to ST3 ICM training.

GMC registration is required: this post is not suitable for MTI programme sponsorship. Previous UK paid NHS experience is essential.

Main duties of the job

These posts are at registrar level, and successful candidates will be expected to have completed foundation training, have 2 years post foundation experience in acute specialties (anesthetics/emergency medicine/internal medicine/ACCS). You must have previous paid NHS experience and to be competent to work with indirect supervision within the intensive care unit. Prior experience in intensive care is required - 3 months minimum. Evidence of suitable advanced airways skills is also required.

Part of the role includes management of referrals from other departments within the hospital, including wards, medical admissions units and Emergency Department and providing medical support for the nursing outreach service. Supervision and teaching of more junior critical care residents is an important part of this post.

Clinical:The post holder will take part in a full shift rota, along with other trainees, which provides 24-hour care for patients including weekends and night shifts. This includes:

Research:

We have several national and international trials that we run and recruit to with opportunities for associate PI roles, involvement with the journal club and development of the role as interested.

Medical Education: The departments have a strong teaching commitment to junior doctors and medical students. We have a regular weekly teaching program and access to simulation. We hope the post-holder will work closely with our education leads to develop the departmental teaching program for juniors and medical students.

Clinical Interest Areas: Anaesthesia, maternal medicine, burns, major surgery, transplant, neuro and trauma critical care, recovery after critical illness. The role will primarily be based in critical care with the option to develop specialist interest skills and be supervised by specialists in the above areas to develop clinical and non-clinical skills managing these patient groups. Opportunities for quality improvement projects and dedicated time in the subspecialty area. Ultrasound (FUSIC mentors): Critical care has a number of FUSIC mentors allowing trainees to undertake formal echo / chest / vascular ultrasound training.
