We have positions available on Ward 36 Chemotherapy Day Unit, based at Freeman Hospital.
Quantifiable experience as a Staff Nurse is required. Ideally experience within the field of cancer is preferred however full training will be provided.
Ward 36 is a fast paced acute day unit administering systemic Anti-Cancer therapy (SACT) to patients with an oncological or haematological malignancy. In addition to administering SACT we also care for patient undergoing supportive treatments such as: blood transfusions, immunoglobulin and venesections. We see between 60-80 patients daily.
Staff will be expected to train within the administration of chemotherapy and immunotherapy within 6-12months of employment through course attendance and completion of UKONS SACT passport.
We also hold the UKONS 24hour triage phone, triaging patients who are unwell whilst on treatment and run an acute emergency assessment unit for patients who need to attend hospital and potentially need admission.
The unit is open 08:00-19:00 seven days a week including bank holidays, therefore weekend working and bank holiday working is an essential part of the role.
In addition we run a community SACT clinic in Cramlington Manor Walks Shopping Centre on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays therefore rotation between the two sites is essential.
Shift pattern: x2 LD (08:00-19:00) and x2 E (08:00-17:00) over a seven day service.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role will be to nurse and care for patients with a range of cancer diagnosis from first diagnosis to palliation.
The role involves running pre-assessment clinics and preparing patients to undergo SACT, supporting patients and educating them on symptom management.
Additionally staff will rotate between our elective SACT treatment areas administering treatments and assessing patients fitness for treatment and our emergency area where they will be triage assessing patients and caring for acutely unwell patients when they attend the unit.
The role requires many clinical skills listed below for which we can provide training if you do not have the desirable skills, additionally with in house training you will be required to read and interpret blood results.
