Are you caring, conscientious and motivated with a passion to work as a Maternity Care Assistant at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. You will work as an effective member of the team to provide quality, compassionate care for woman, babies and their families under the supervision of multi-disciplinary colleagues.

Full and part time hours are available. Flexibility is offered within this post can include nights, weekends, and bank holidays. Successful candidates will be supported to work towards further development opportunities in line with Health Education England: Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework.

Main duties of the job

The Maternity Care Assistant works as part of the wider multidisciplinary team carrying out a range of tasks that focus on housekeeping, cleanliness of the ward, administration and the personal care of mothers and babies. They will work in a range of maternity settings under the direct supervision of a midwife. Daily tasks will include stock rotations and ordering, cleanliness across the ward, supporting patients with nutrition and hydration and basic administration tasks.

They will support a friendly, nurturing and welcoming environment for service users, and their families. Within all areas they will contribute to the provision of woman centred, personalised care. This will include promoting continuity of care.

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • NVQ Level 2 qualification in appropriate subject or equivalent or equivalent experience
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) or willingness to undertake Level 2 functional skills within 12 months
  • Care Certificate or commitment to complete care certificate within 12 months

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Understand basic food hygiene concepts
  • Basic knowledge of Infection, Prevention and Control
  • Understanding of confidentiality

Desirable

  • Experience of previously working in a health care setting
  • Understanding of basic safeguarding
  • Experience of working within a team

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with service users and their families, with varying levels of understanding Presents self as courteous, respectful and helpful
  • Ability to work effectively under direct supervision, as part of the multi-disciplinary team
