MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (Critical Care) through a three year competency based apprenticeship programme including two years supernumerary, to achieve the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine ACCP membership requirements and non-medical prescribing, and a clinical Foundation Year for completion of the full MSc - Band 7.
On successful completion of the full Msc In Advanced Clinical Practice, including non-medical prescribing, FICM ACCP membership requirements and a full clinical Foundation Year of practice over three years - Band 8a.

Main duties of the job
- In this advanced role the post holder will provide expert clinical management and care to patients in Critical Care and work towards a role traditionally undertaken by doctors working as a stage 1 Intensive Care Medicine trainee
- Following successful completion of the first two years of Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) training at Masters level, the post holder will work as a Foundation ACP in adult critical care for a full calendar year to consolidate the knowledge and clinical skills developed during training including a non-medical prescribing course
- On completion of three years training at Masters level and following successful appraisal the trainee will progress to a band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Adult Critical Care

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic individuals, committed to developing the role of an advanced clinical practitioner in adult critical care, providing expert clinical management to level 1-3 critically ill patients. As a trainee Advanced Critical Care Practitioner you will already be an experienced clinician with critical care knowledge and possess the drive to develop in the four pillars of Advanced Practice.
The trainee role requires attendance on a 3-year Masters level competency-based training apprenticeship programme in line with the DOH (2008) National Education & Competency Framework for Advanced Critical Care Practitioners and the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) Curriculum for Training for Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (2023). This will be facilitated collaboratively between Northumbria University and Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Hospitals.
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner MSc award (Advanced Critical Care Practitioner) is reflective of the NHS England (NHSE) Multiprofessional framework for advanced clinical practice in England (2025) and has been designed following the NHSE Centre for Advancing Practice (CfAP) Standards for Education and Training (SETS) (2021). The programme is specifically aligned and designed to meet the requirements of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE)Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Integrated degree). Candidates will be expected to meet the minimum entry criteria for the apprenticeship and for the Northumbria University MSc.
In parallel with the university delivered components of the MSc, experience will be gained by completing clinical placements in four adult critical care units. All of the Trusts critical care units are busy and dynamic whose philosophies are to invest in and develop the workforce and practice. The four critical care units are:
Freeman Hospital
- Cardiothoracic ICU 15 beds, admitting approx 1,200 patients/year, plus 6 level 2 beds. The unit specialise in: Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery & Heart and Lung Transplantation.
- Integrated Critical Care Unit - 22 beds (ICU and HDU), admitting approx. 1,200 patients/year. The Critical Care unit specialises in: Hepato-biliary; Hepatology and Liver Transplantation, Major Vascular Surgery; ENT and General Surgery, Respiratory and General Medicine, Renal and Urology, Orthopaedics and Cardiology.
Royal Victoria Infirmary
- Ward 38 - ICU/HDU- 20 beds, admitting approx 1200 patients/year. The unit specialises in Burns and Plastics, Upper & Lower GI surgery, Obstetrics, general medicine and general surgery.
4. Ward 18 - ICU/HDU 22 beds (ICU & HDU) admitting approx 1500 patients/year. The unit specialises in: Neurosurgery, Trauma and infectious diseases.
