Job summary

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit enthusiastic, motivated individuals who want a future career as a Pharmacy Technician.

We are a busy Pharmacy Department offering a diverse and complex range of functions and activities including; Dispensary, ward based and clinical activities, logistics, stores and procurement, clinical trials, aseptic preparation and medicines information. We have an automated robotic dispensing and stock supply system.

The successful candidates will undertake an apprenticeship that will provide them with all of the necessary skills and knowledge to complete the Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. Students who successfully complete the apprenticeship will be eligible to apply to register as a qualified Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC.

Entry Criteria - minimum 4 GCSE's (or equivalent level) at grade 4 or above in:Maths, English or English Language (English lit or English speaking/listening are not acceptable)Biology* or Human Biology or Chemistry* (*or Dual Award Science. NB Dual Award Applied Science at level 2 will not be acceptable)

Main duties of the job

The apprenticeship involves on the job training and a requirement to attend classroom lectures delivered by Bradford College one day a week. Students access these classroom sessions remotely from home or from the work place. The course has a blended learning approach consisting of a combination of skills work based units covered in the workplace and knowledge based units covered by assignments set by the college. Professional discussions, appraisals feedback, witness statements and reflective accounts form an end point assessment which must be undertaken to achieve the L3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technician's qualification. The course places emphasis on professionalism, reflective practice and person centered care therefore it is important that students can communicate effectively with colleagues, patients and work effectively as part of the ward based multidisciplinary team, to ensure that patients achieve the maximum benefit from their medicines. Reflective practice is an important part of the students continuing professional development (CPD) and they are expected to continually reflect upon their practice.

Within the workplace the core activities are the safe dispensing of medicines, rotating throughout the pharmacy department and between both hospital sites. A large amount of time is spent out on the wards covering various ward based pharmacy duties.

Apprenticeship Posts You will need to be able to meet all the eligibility requirements as prescribed by the apprenticeship criteria to undertake the role.

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must:

  • Have the right to work and remain in the UK.
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
