Job summary

This post is suitable for an individual seeking to enter specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery, or someone who has passed their fellowship exams looking for subspecialty experience. There will be opportunity to gain experience in transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

Candidates must possess good clinical/operative skills and have excellent communication skills, with an ability to work well within the team.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint an extremely motivated and ambitious trust doctor (registrar ST3+) to join our team of 8 clinical fellows/trust doctors who provide middle grade cover for our service. The registrar will be supported by an excellent team of advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) on the ward as well as 3 surgical care practitioners (SCPs) in theatre. This post is for a doctor who has completed CST training who wishes to gain some more clinical and operative experience in cardiothoracic or for a more senior trainee/surgeon who would like to develop further subspecialty interest including MCS and transplant.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

Day to day care of pre- and post-operative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients on the wards, clinics and theatres

Perform operations as a first operator (with consultant supervision) if appropriate as well as assist in theatres depending on the level of experience

Attend outpatient clinics to see new or follow patients under the supervision of the consultant

2nd on-call for any ICU/HDU/ward emergencies for cardiothoracic surgical patients (1:8 resident on-call)

Reviewing patients daily, requesting appropriate investigation and treating the patients appropriately

Take and see referrals for cardiac and thoracic surgical patients, liaising with the on-call consultant surgeons

Seeks timely assistance from senior colleagues when appropriate

Administrative:

Ensuring accurate and representative entries are made in the case notes

Filling out referrals to MDTs and requesting investigations in a timely fashion

Research/Audit:

Participate actively in local audit and presentations; as well as attend the monthly M&M meetings

Participate in any research activity and submit abstracts to meetings; present at national/international meetings

Teaching:

Attend the cardiothoracic weekly teaching and journal club

Present at the weekly teaching

Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff/medical and nursing students if appropriate

To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend.
