Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre Team as a Cadaveric Laboratory Manager to support the effective running of the Laboratory and Theatre services within the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre.

The Newcastle Surgical Training Centre is a unique state of the art facility based at the Freeman Hospital, providing advanced cadaveric education to the medical profession.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will ensure effective governance arrangements are implemented across the laboratory provision including responsibility for standards of practice, policies and procedure
  • Liaison with multi-specialty leads, faculty & partners in industry
  • Collaboration with Newcastle University regarding suitability and acceptance of donor cadavers for the NSTC
  • Contributes to the work of the department, through the provision of high quality care and the appropriate use and development of resources
  • Work collaboratively as an effective member of the NSTC
  • As Designated Person, ensure legal obligations of the NSTC are met in both services and practice with regards to the Human Tissue Act

Job responsibilities

  • To mange the laboratory requirements which facilitate national and international cadaveric surgical simulation training programmes based in the NSTC.
  • To be accountable for ensuring the provision of a high quality responsive service meeting both regulatory and accreditation requirements specifically in relation to the Human Tissue Authority (HTA).
  • To be responsible for all laboratory provisions including preparation of theatres, medical equipment, surgical instruments, implementing infection control policies, sterilisation and processing of equipment.
  • Assist in the completion of audits, quality management, development of SOPs, health and safety and incident reporting in line with HTA regulatory activities and standards.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate.The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

  • Diploma / Degree in relevant subject or equivalent knowledge and experience in surgical theatre environment: to include multi surgical specialities, laparoscopic and robotic surgery
  • Extensive clinical practice or specialist qualification in relevant specialty, NVQ111 in Operating Department Support, Qualified Operating Department Practitioner or Perioperative Nurse

Desirable

  • Leadership/management qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Previous management experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy and adult safeguarding processes
  • Evidence of on-going professional development
  • Knowledge of cadaveric specimens and porcine tissue utilised for surgical simulation
  • Has experience of supervising learning and learners within a clinical environment
