The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Research Fellow in Respiratory Medicine (ST1-2 equivalent)

The closing date is 08 June 2025

Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible and dynamic individual to support our Adult Respiratory Medicine Unit. There are two components to the role; the candidate will support ward and outpatient activities on a rolling rota basis. There is a significant component of the time spent supporting the Clinical Trials Unit either seeing patients for their trials visits or when in clinic/ ward setting signposting patients into research. You will be working within a large ward and outpatient team for Clinical Service offering scope to extend skills in Respiratory Medicine. The trials centre has over 20 open studies across Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Pleural and Sleep Medicine. The candidate will work alongside the Respiratory Nursing Team to ensure patients' visits, physical examinations and results are conducted/ reviewed as needed. Prior experience in trials is not mandatory but the candidate will be expected to undertake Good Clinical Practice certification.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Please read attached Job Description and Person Specification.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the job is to support ward and outpatient based clinical activities and to provide medical cover to the busy Respiratory Clinical Trials Unit at Freeman Hospital. The candidate will develop clinical trials skills across a range of open studies for Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Sleep and Pleural Disease.

For an informal discussion and further information regarding the opportunity and Directorate, please contact:Prof Tony De Soyza on 01912231439 (PA) or via email at Anthony.de-soyza@ncl.ac.uk.

We typically receive several hundred applications for ST1/2 locally employed doctor posts and we will therefore only shortlist candidates with paid NHS experience (this does not include Clinical Access or Clinical Observership placements) which is an essential criteria within the Person Specification. Please do not apply if you do not have paid NHS experience as this leads to significant clinician time reviewing applications from applicants who will not be shortlisted.

Please read attached Job Description and Person Specification.
