Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a highly skilled podiatrist with experience of managing patients with foot ulceration, and lower limb arterial disease, many of whom will also have Diabetes.

This Lower Limb Ischemic Management Service (LLIMS) is an expansion of the current service which has previously only been open to patients with Diabetes and this expansion is part of an initiative to reduce health inequalities in the area.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and resourceful podiatrist to be based at the Freeman hospital, as part of a small team of podiatry, nursing and support staff. The role will manage inpatients with foot disease and provide outpatient clinical assessment to meet the needs of patients referred to Vascular from Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle and Gateshead.

Main duties of the job

The role will require well developed skills in communication, negotiation and prioritisation, and a commitment to continually develop pathways through service improvement to ensure the best quality of care is being provided to our patient with foot ulceration and lower limb vascular disease or Chronic Limb threatening Ischaemia (CLTI)

Key to the role is the teaching and dissemination of skills and knowledge to a wider staff group of all grades and disciplines across the trust and in the wider NENC area. and will be expected to act as a role model ensuring that robust procedures and high standards of clinical care and patient safety are in place.

The post- holder will need to be able to work in a high-pressure environment, can make complex decisions in conjunction with colleagues and be highly organised.

It is essential you hold current HCPC registration and have significant in- patient and wound care experience working at Band 6 level.

Job responsibilities

  • The role will involve dynamic triage of referrals from across NENC
  • To do both outpatient vascular assessment with our Periflux 6000 and WIFI scoring, whilst also providing inpatient Vascular Podiatry care to patients admitted with foot ulceration, and may have had surgical debridement
  • Have knowledge and experience of using advanced wound care techniques such as Topical Negative pressure, Stimulan and Larvae therapy where most appropriate
  • To work towards an IRMER qualification to refer for radiological investigations
  • To work as part of an MDT approach to managing complex foot ulceration, by joining the weekly virtual Vascular/Foot MDT with consultant colleagues from Diabetes, Orthopedics, Microbiology, Radiology, Infectious diseases and Vascular
  • The post holder will be required to support ongoing data collection and outcome measures in order to demonstrate productivity and equitable access to the vascular department
  • Support the Vascular team in decision making for patients, including treatment options to facilitate safe and efficient hospital discharge
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines to utilise Evidence based practice treatment modalities and develop standard operating procedures which can be used across the trust
  • Teaching of students, apprentices, and a range of qualified health care professionals

  • To provide an experienced and enthusiastic advanced resource and leadership for the Podiatry team taking a developmental and operational lead in specialist or complex areas such as Biomechanics or Diabetes and High Risk or Nail Surgery or Wound Care or Mental Health or services to the Acute sector
  • Using advanced knowledge to assess and treat cases in a holistic way, including a multi-agency and patient focused approach to care, and to motivate others to work in a similar way
