Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaging and committed individual to work in Newcastle Hospitals trust. This post is designed to suit an individual with an interest in HPB and Transplant Surgery who is looking for a broad experience in HPB and abdominal transplant surgery.
The successful candidate would contribute to covering the inpatient Ward 38 transplant oriented workload, as well as having a commitment to the National Organ Retrieval Service (NORS) team as a surgical assistant. We would encourage involvement in elective HPB surgery, including major liver/pancreas resections as well as retroperitoneal sarcomas and neuroendocrine tumours. There is also opportunity to participate in daycase lists of hernias and cholecystectomies.
The post is from 6 August 2025 until 4 August 2026 and applicants must possess GMC registration at time of application. Previous paid NHS experience is essential.

Main duties of the job
The post would suit a trainee in Surgery with a special interest in HPB and Transplant. The trainee will have completed Foundation training, be studying for MRCS and be orientated towards a general surgery career, but trainees with other career aspirations will also be considered.
This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for core training or specialist ST3+ programs.

This post is attached to the HPB and Transplant department. The individual will work on the F2/CST tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level, as well as provide supervision as appropriate to foundation doctors.
Specific components of this post
The individual will contribute to the ward 38 rota and as well as having a commitment to the National Organ Retrieval Service (NORS) team as a surgical assistant. Electively, they will contribute to providing high level care to complex transplant inpatients as well as transplant and HPB clinics. The individual will also have opportunities to participate in theatre as assistant in major resectional/transplantation surgery and also in daycase general surgery lists.
Teaching
There is no formal teaching component to this post, but the successful candidate will be expected to deliver informal support to medical students and other junior doctors on the ward.
Personal Education
All staff are encouraged to question and learn from the extensive clinical activities that take place on the unit. There are a number of weekly meetings that provide excellent educational opportunities. These include; Directorate Audit/M and M meeting, MDT and departmental meetings including research and audit updates. There is a Monday lunchtime transplant teaching programme at which attendance is expected.
Research/Audit
This directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects. The high volume of specialist activity performed in the unit ensures there is a vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged and results presented at regional, national and international meetings.
Clinical
Each doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients to which he/she is allocated under the direct supervision of the Consultant. In addition he/she is expected to provide cross-cover for all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, coding etc.) and presentations (M + M, transplant assessment meetings etc.)
Administration
Each Resident Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the Consultants.
