Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly Community Dietetics Team at Newcastle Hospitals: We are looking for a Band 6 Specialist dietitian with excellent organisational and communication skills to oversee a caseload of patients requiring oral nutrition support (ONS) in the Newcastle upon Tyne community. Most patient work is conducted as home visits (patient's own homes and care homes), supported by community-based clinics and is challenging, interesting, and rewarding, given the diverse, often complex nature of the patient group.

The role works closely with the ONS lead dietitian to support a weekly care home Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting. Also to collaboratively undertake service development work.

Agile working is supported by the issue of mobile kit (laptop). The role also offers development of leadership/ coaching skills, as the successful post holder will oversee provision of 'peer support' (opportunity to facilitate 1:1 meetings and appraisals) to dietetic support workers and practitioners.

Main duties of the job

You should be enthusiastic and self-motivated and will:

Work with the Oral Nutrition Support dietetic team, to help oversee a caseload of adult patients across Newcastle upon Tyne. Involving home/care home visits, community clinics, tel reviews and MDT meetings.

Have experience in area of nutrition support.

Be self-motivated and organised given busy caseload and lone worker aspect of role.

Be able to demonstrate ongoing CPD and have evidence of developing practice.

Be able to maintain good relationships with colleagues and the wider the MDT

The post holder will be required to

Deliver a high-quality dietetic service in line with trust values.

Contribute to effective team working, including support to dietetic support worker staff and attendance at team meetings.

Oversee management of referrals from triage through to discharge.

Take part in student training and supervision.

Contribute to service development, research and audit.

Due to the nature of the post including carrying of weighing equipment, car driver with driving license are essential requirements.

The post holder will be based at our modern offices at Regents Point, Gosforth. Newcastle Nutrition is privileged to have good support from dietetic support workers/practitioners and administrative staff. The role is also well supported by a community dietetics manager, head of dietetics service, lead band 7 and band 6 dietitians. The team also have excellent links with the acute services within Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, facilitating CPD opportunities, access to specialist guidance and seamless hospital to home care.

Our department is committed to the provision of the full range of dietetic student practice placements. The successful candidate will be required to supervise students and support the organisation and delivery of student training placements within the community team. All dietitians within the service have established job plans; we actively encourage service development, research / audit and continuing professional development opportunities.

  • Delivers a comprehensive and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic service in acute hospital services in the specialist area/s or in the community. See appendix for in depth job details
  • Provides specialist dietetic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management in the clinical setting and in one or more sub-specialty areas. This may include supplementary prescribing
  • Acts as a source of expertise in nutrition support/education and dietetics to patients, medical staff, health care professionals, relatives, carers and all relevant agencies.

  • Delivers education and training at all levels.
  • Participates in team and multi-disciplinary evaluation, audit and research.
