Job summary

The post will commence on 2 April 2025 for a fixed 4 month contract, with an opportunity to extend for a further 12 months on to our local orthopaedic rotation scheme.

The job will be based at the RVI, which is the regional major trauma centre, and Freeman Hospital, which it a tertiary referral centre for elective orthopaedic surgery. The initial 4 month period will be within the orthopaedic trauma service but candidates successful in extending their contract will then undertake 4 months rotations in orthopaedic trauma, orthopaedic spinal surgery and elective orthopaedic surgery. This post is especially suitable for candidates who wish to gain more experience prior to application to core surgical training or specialist surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics.

The orthopaedic trauma service acts as a tertiary referral centre for major and polytrauma, pelvic fractures, limb reconstruction and bone infection. We also deal with a significant amount of general orthopaedic trauma and aim to provide exposure to common injuries such as hip, wrist and ankle fractures.

Main duties of the job

The orthopaedic spine service treats complex problems around the spine in adults and children and is one of the only units nationally to treat all aspects of orthopaedic spine surgery including deformity, degenerate, trauma, tumour and infection.

The elective orthopaedic service at Freeman delivers tertiary level care for major joint replacement surgery, soft tissue knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery, hand and wrist surgery and houses the regional bone and soft tissue sarcoma service, one of only 5 in the country.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a role managing patients on the ward, and also attend clinic and theatres, along with MDT meetings. They will take part in the RVI orthopaedic trauma rota, also covering neurosurgery cases overnight. Onsite senor support is available 24/7.

We expect the successful candidate to take a full role in the running of the department, including research, audit and quality improvement projects. We envisage that the successful candidate will prepare a number of research and clinical papers for publication and presentation at national or international meetings.
