Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.The department is looking to appoint a Consultant Urologist with a sub-specialist interest in Robotic Cancer surgery.

It is a highly desirable requirement to have completed a fellowship in Robotic surgery based on the Intuitive platform.

The appointee will join a group of 24 Consultant Urologists based at the Freeman Hospital providing services to Tyneside, Gateshead and Northumberland on a Hub and Spoke model.

Main duties of the job

The Urology Department has a large fixed bed base between 2 inpatient wards (60 beds) and 1 day case/ short stay ward (20 beds). Surgery is delivered between 5 Urology Theatres and 1 further theatre in our new Day Case Hospital. Robotic surgery is based on 3 Intuitive XI systems, with a possible 4th system being considered. Robotic surgery is supported by a dedicated team of surgical Care Practitioners as well a Specialist Nurse Teams. The Urology Department offers almost all Urology Services on one site including complex functional and reconstructive work, complex stones, major oncology as well as a wide range of benign procedures.

Average numbers of procedures performed in the department per year are in the region of 200-250 robotic prostatectomies, 40-50 robotic cystectomies with ileal conduit or intracorporal neo bladder and 300 renal procedures robotic, laparoscopic and open including caval thrombectomy.

The Urology research group is well established with a professorial chair, and a dedicated team of Research Urology staff including dedicated research Admin Managers, Research Nurse and grant support. We have close ties with Newcastle University and a number of clinical trial units in the UK. Current research covers a wide range of areas including clinical oncology studies and benign urology.
