Job summary
It is increasingly recognised that in utero exposure to certain medications can alter the development of the foetus leading to an increased risk of congenital anomalies and altered developmental trajectories. Both physical and neurodevelopmental features cluster together to form diagnosable syndromes such as foetal valproate spectrum disorder/ foetal valproate syndrome.
In recognition of the complexity and specialist multidisciplinary input required to diagnose and care for these patients, NHS England has commissioned a new pilot multidisciplinary service between Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Newcastle University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The foetal exposure to medicines service will establish optimised multidisciplinary assessment and interventional procedures for children and adults at risk of a foetal exposure syndrome.
