Job summary

The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is one of the country's leading cancer treatment facilities located in 2 purpose built centres, one at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle and one in Carlisle, Cumbria, providing radiotherapy services to the population of the North East and Cumbria.

An opportunity has arisen to appoint a full time Senior Therapeutic Radiographer within Radiotherapy at NCCC.

Applications are invited from well-motivated and enthusiastic, experienced radiographers with pre- treatment imaging or treatment experience. It is expected that the candidate has IGRT experience. The post-holder will support the management of a section within the department ensuring the highest quality of technical practice, patient care and ensure workload targets are achieved. The post-holder will be required to work in imaging and treatment dependent on experience and departmental needs. The post holder will be required to have a flexible approach to working hours to accommodate service demands.

Main duties of the job

  • Radiotherapy involves the use of ionising radiation in targeting tumours; the radiation is delivered to the patient using highly complex treatment machines (valued in excess of £1million).
  • The radiotherapy departments in both Newcastle and Cumbria will benefit from state of the art equipment which includes 8 linear accelerators in Newcastle and 2 linear accelerators in Cumbria
  • The imaging sections of the 2 department will have 3 CT scanners and a dedicated MRI scanner which are used in the pre-treatment process to provide images necessary to plan the patients' treatment and provide oncology diagnostic imaging for the Trust.
  • The department has responsibility to train BSc radiotherapy students in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University
  • The radiographers work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, along with Consultant Clinical Oncologists, Specialist registrars, physicist, medical technologist & specialist nurses in achieving a high standard of care for the patient.

  • Responsible for the management of a team of radiographers and a clinical workload within a specified clinical area, ensuring the highest quality of technical practice and patient care.
  • Accountable for the direct delivery of radiotherapy within a specified clinical area.
  • To implement and deliver complex radiotherapy procedures including localisation, imaging, dose calculation and treatment delivery.
  • To undertake radiotherapy practice independently and professionally in accordance with all protocols and procedures, and with care and accuracy.
  • To ensure workload targets are achieved with optimal use of resources
  • To participate in and ensure staff & student training/development takes place.
  • Contribute to holistic patient care as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing specialist advice and information regarding radiotherapy to patients and their carers.

The radiotherapy department benefits from state of the art equipment which includes 2 Novalis Truebeam STX linacs with stereotactic capability, 5 Varian TrueBeam linacs, and 2 Tomotherapy units . The Imaging section comprises a 2 Siemens CT scanners a dedicated MRI scanner. The centre is committed to delivering a high quality service, maintaining the highest specification equipment and contributing to radiotherapy research and development.
