Applications are invited for 1 substantive - 8 PA post in Paediatric Neurology based at the Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH) in Newcastle upon Tyne. The successful candidate will join a vibrant Paediatric Neurology department composed of 4 NHS Paediatric Neurologists, 3 Clinical Academic Paediatric Neurologists, 2 NHS Consultants in Paediatric Neurodisability and 1 Clinical Academic in Paediatric Neurodisability.

Main duties of the job
The GNCH Paediatric Neurology and Neurodisability Service makes a major clinical contribution to the success of 5 nationally commissioned services in Rare Mitochondrial Diseases, Rare Neuromuscular Diseases, Paediatric onset Multiple Sclerosis and Demyelination, the SCID transplant Service and the Children's Cardiac Transplant Service. This is in addition to offering specialised services and research in neurorehabilitation following acute brain injury, adaptive mechanisms of recovery following early stroke, regional paediatric complex epilepsy service including ketogenic dietary therapy (KDT), vagus nerve stimulation and intrathecal baclofen pump therapy.

The post-holder will be based at GNCH and assume the duties of a consultant paediatric neurologist, managing the inpatient and outpatient care of children with neurological problems, providing clinical opinion and support to paediatric intensive care (GNCH and FRH), general paediatrics and other paediatric specialties at GNCH, RVI (neonatal intensive care unit) and Freeman Hospital.
The appointee will be expected to liaise with the wider multi-disciplinary team individually and on a collective basis at formal MDT meetings, such as Complex Patient Case Discussions held periodically on PICU and discharge planning meetings for inpatients. The post-holder will also be expected to take a full and active role in departmental and directorate level initiatives on student and post-graduate (trainee) education, supervision, audit and quality improvement, as well as administrative tasks to support the department.
Each of paediatric neurology consultants contributes to the outreach programme and the appointee will also take on responsibility for specified outreach clinics within the region. Appropriate secretarial support will be provided. Personal office and computer facilities will be provided in the Paediatric Neurology department.
