The Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH) is based on the Royal Victoria Infirmary site. GNCH is one of twelve national tertiary centres and has international expertise in immunology and oncology. GNCH Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the lead centre for the Northern Region.
GNCH's tertiary services cover a population of around four million, with some services provided nationally and internationally. Within the Children's Directorate our departments include medicine, surgery, urology, oncology, neurology, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, immunology, allergy, infectious diseases, rheumatology, gastroenterology, and nephrology, all providing high level secondary care for the children of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Northumberland and tertiary care for the Northern Region (population c. 3.5 million ). This same delivery of excellence comes from our sister departments within GNCH; orthopaedics and trauma, spinal surgery, ENT, plastics, burns, cleft lip, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, dentistry and dermatology. The department of haematology is currently being migrated to the Children's Directorate, which will enable an integrated service across malignant and general haematology, including a very specialised service in CAR-T cell therapy and coagulation
Main duties of the job
Clinical:
- Contribute to the day to day running of the GNCH Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and the North East and Cumbria Transport and Retrieval
- Contribute to GNCH PICU and NECTAR on-call rota
- Responsibility for the paediatric intensive care unit including managing referrals and new admissions
- Deliver and supervise transfer of critically ill children
- Provide remote advice in the management of acutely ill children in their local hospital
- Provide decision support for patient transfers within the region facilitated by NECTAR
