The successful candidate will be able to prove a high level of achievement, motivation and enthusiasm in their current role, ideally with experience in medicine. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the medicine board whilst remaining professional, resilient, optimistic and resourceful.
The role will work seamlessly alongside the matrons and all staff on the medicine wards at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, they will also be supported by the Directorate Management Team. Main duties of the job
The Medicine Deputy Matron will provide senior operational leadership:
- Maintain high clinical standards of harm free care for our patients
- Deputise for medicine matron
- Ensure robust frameworks are used and lessons learned are embedded when changes to practice are needed
- Ensure oversight of daily planning, capacity and flow within the board ensuring this is matched by optimal use of resources to meet the needs of our patients and escalate any concerns immediately
- Motivate and ensure all team members are supported to work seamlessly and effectively
- Use independent decision making and clinical judgement to uphold professional standards and ensure delivery of a high-quality responsive service
- Use expert knowledge to manage risk and lead on coordinating governance and quality standards
- Coordinate and support all team members with HR processes
- Work collaboratively and respectively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for patients
- Remain calm under pressure when dealing with multiple competing priorities
- Be proactive in continuously evolving and improving our service

- To provide support to, and deputise for the Matron across a directorate or agreed sub-directorate portfolio.
- To support the Matron in maintain the delivery and quality of services provided within the care environment. This will include the care delivered, setting of nursing standards, leadership of the team, and working clinically with staff where needed to help the acquisition of skills, knowledge and competence.
- To provide a nursing lead as a member of the multidisciplinary team providing advice and advocacy.
- In conjunction with the clinical governance and audit leads for the directorate co-ordinate all aspects of clinical governance, risk management and patient safety.
- As an integral part of the Directorate Management Team, facilitate, develop and co-ordinate clinical risk management within the Directorate. Foster a fair blame culture in line with the corporate objectives, resulting in the delivery of a high quality, cost effective service.
- Promote a positive learning environment where lessons are learnt and changes implemented to ensure a quality service working in partnership with the Directorate Manager, Matron and Clinical Director, Heads of Department both clinical and non-clinical.
- To work closely with colleagues to raise the profile of governance and risk management, highlighting in practice the relationship between patient safety and the management and everyday clinical practice and the effects on the patient to identify areas of good practice and highlight areas that can be improved.
