We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for highly motivated, ambitious individuals to join our well-integrated team at NECTAR (North East and Cumbria Transfer and Retrieval). Applications are invited for Clinical Fellows in Paediatric Critical Care Transport. The post is for a period of 12 months.
The Paediatric NECTAR clinical fellow posts (ST3+ equivalent) require 2 years prior postgraduate training in / critical care / anaesthesia / paediatrics. It is desirable to have a minimum of 3 months post-foundation critical care experience) and desirable for candidates to have basic Anaesthesia Competencies. The regional PICUs at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are the Level 3 PCC units for NECTAR, the regional transport team. It provides regional intensive care for medical patients and supra-regional services for children with surgical, neurosurgical and cardiac problems including ECMO & heart transplant. The level 2 unit at James Cook University Hospital provides high dependency care and is part of the long term ventilation hub and spoke service.
The NECTAR service mainly facilitates transfers between the 10 acute Trusts and provides paediatric critical care advice to colleagues in the region. The paediatric service currently performs around 300 PIC retrievals per year and around 1200 Level1&2 transfers. NECTAR has also been commissioned since the pandemic to provide an adult transport service.
Main duties of the job
Clinical:
- Interhospital transfer of critically ill children (with an appropriate level of supervision) by land and air.
- Supporting NECTAR practitioners with triage and delivery of practitioner led transfer.
- Supernumerary sessions at PICU_GNCH or FRH_PICU for educational purposes.
- Preparing and presenting case reviews.
- Develop communication and shared learning.
- Teaching on stabilisation training days.
- Multidisciplinary team teaching and simulation.
In addition to workplace-based assessments, successful applicants will be expected to gather evidence to use towards the PCCS passport and/or optionally Adult critical care transport competency framework

The posts are intended to provide experience in paediatric critical care (general & cardiac), paediatric anaesthesia, transport & retrieval medicine including paediatric ECMO transfers and training equivalent to that recommended by the Paediatric Intensive Care Society and Royal College of Paediatric & Child Health.
NECTAR fellows will have the chance to gain exposure to multidisciplinary team working and participate in challenging decision-making processes due to the broad range of cases and involvement of various paediatric sub-specialities.
This post would be suitable as a stand-alone fellowship, as out-of-programme experience or as a post-CCT fellowship. Applicants wishing to take up a fellowship on a less than full time basis are welcome to apply.
