The post is to work in the Corneal and external eye disease service. The time table would be confirmed on job planning. The department provides all specialities.
This post will be based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, but may involve clinics and operating at outreach sites. All routine cataract surgery takes place at the Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre which is a mile from the RVI.
Main duties of the job
Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:
To provide clinical and surgical expertise in line with agreed job plan.
Administrative:
- To ensure communication with other healthcare professionals occurs in an effective and timely manner.
Teaching:
- To contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate ophthalmology teaching programmes.
- To contribute to the training of non-medical practitioners and community optometrists
Research:
Involvement in research encouraged.

Essential
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC Registration
- FRCOphth or equivalent
Desirable
- Higher Degree.
- Special skills training in the specialty.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Evidence of extensive experience in general ophthalmology and sub-specialty experience in cornea and external eye diseases ex.
- Up-to-date knowledge and experience in cornea and external eye diseases.
- Evidence of experience in the management of emergency ophthalmic conditions
- Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
- Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
- Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Desirable
- Evidence of subspeciality training in a specific area of ophthalmology
- Ability to perform surgery including independent cataract lists.
- Able to operate independently covering a comprehensive range of corneal surgery.
