Job summary

Are you a motivated and experienced charity finance leader with a drive to make an impact? If so, this is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future for Newcastle Hospitals Charity as we deliver on a new 5 year strategy to make a real difference for the patients, staff and local community served by Newcastle Hospitals.

A key member of the Newcastle Hospitals Charity leadership team, the Charity Head of Finance will work with colleagues across the Charity and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop and deliver an effective and efficient Charity finance operation.

The post-holder will work across the Charity and the Trust to implement best charity financial practice. The post-holder will liaise with the charity finance sector nationally to ensure continuous improvement of professional charity finance standards.

Applications are invited from people who have a passion for making an impact and the post-holder will be an experienced finance leader, able to establish effective relationships across a wide range of individuals.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate their approach to developing and managing a portfolio across multiple work-streams in an ever changing environment and competing priorities.

Main duties of the job

  • Leading a small and committed team, the Charity Head of Finance will shape the financial strategy for Newcastle Hospital Charity and will ensure that effective financial policies and procedures are in place to support the effective delivery of the Charity's ambitious strategy to 2026.
  • Working as a key member of the Charity's leadership team to set and monitor ambitious targets across income generation and funding programmes.

Essential requirements include a professional accountancy qualification and significant relevant experience, and a successful track record of working within a complex operating environment. Working knowledge and experience of NHS charities is desirable.

  • To provide professional finance support to Newcastle Hospitals Charity, with particular reference to ensuring that the appropriate financial policy and procedure framework is in place to ensure effective financial management to guide the charitys financial decision making and advise on likely financial consequences of proposed courses of action.
  • To engage with the Charitys senior team and the Charity Committee, to develop strategic plans that deliver on an ambitious strategy with value for money.
  • To work closely with the Charitys senior team, providing timely and accurate information and advice to facilitate the effective monitoring and management of the Charitys financial position and to support the decision-making process.
  • To manage the process for producing the Charitys annual statutory accounts and annual audit.
  • To effectively manage the cash and investments of the Charity, for example management of bank accounting; cashflow forecasting and liaison with investment managers.
  • To effectively interact with Trust Corporate Finance function, providing information and detail to ensure appropriate joint working.
  • To play a lead role in the development of Charity financial awareness and financial best practice within the Charity and the Trust.
  • To ensure that financial controls are maintained within Charity Commission and HMRC guidelines.

  • Significant post qualification experience in the finance department of a registered charity and / or a complex organisation
  • Significant understanding of the Charity Code of Governance
  • Demonstrable experience in a financial management environment, including ability to provide detailed guidance and advice to finance and non-finance managers
  • Demonstrable experience in month and year end closure of accounts including preparation of annual financial charity accounts
  • In depth specialist and practical knowledge of charity financial regulations and corporate governance
  • Evidence of participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Computer literate, especially in the use of financial reporting tools and Microsoft office
  • Leadership & mentoring of finance staff
