Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Business Manager in the internationally recognised John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDRC). Ideally you will have experience of a leadership role within Clinical Research role already and this role will lead on overseeing the operations of the centre, working with the supportive leadership team to shape the future of research excellence in neuromuscular disease.
With almost 20 years of experience in delivering clinical trials, the JWMDRC is well established to attract research in the neuromuscular field. Over the past 10 years, the centre has run more than 50 clinical research projects, from commercial trials to international academic collaborations and investigator led studies, from interventional trials with advanced therapies to observational and natural history studies. The JWMDRC has a strong national profile, driving national initiatives to increase clinical trial capacity in neuromuscular disease and leading national networks for post marketing studies.

Main duties of the job
- Work closely with the wider JWMDRC leadership team to develop and deliver strategic objectives to grow clinical research at the centre.
- Manage and develop an experienced and committed team including research NMAHPS (Nurse, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals), clinical trial coordinators, data managers and project managers delivering commercial, academic and investigator led national and international studies.
- Work closely with Newcastle University and Newcastle Trust to optimize research delivery
- Overseeing the management of the clinical research team across NHS and University team members Manage and develop clinical research income including commercial and grant funding
- Promote the JWMDRC as a world leading centre for translational clinical research in neuromuscular disease
- Interact with patient ambassadors, academic collaborators and commercial sponsors nationally and internationally.
- Lead on compliance with regulatory and funder requirements at the JWMDRC
- Lead on quality assurance for clinical research at the JWMDRC
- Work closely with managers, clinicians, department heads, HR, and Finance. This will include close working with colleagues in the Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO), the Newcastle Clinical Research Facility (NCRF) and Newcastle University
- Work closely with staff of Trusts and organisations with remit and responsibility for clinical research delivery across the North East and North Cumbria and beyond.

The JWMDRC works across Newcastle University and Newcastle Hospitals, integrating research into the clinical care and vice-versa. The collaboration between the Institutions is key to support the translational research approach, bringing pre-clinical to clinical research and patient access. This role will be fundamental in supporting the cross organisational working and engaging with the appropriate stakeholder.
This is a key leadership role in which the post holder is accountable for supporting the strategic planning to grow the portfolio and the delivery of clinical research.
