Job summary

The Imaging Physics and Radiation Safety Unit of the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate is seeking to recruit two Pre-Registrant Clinical Scientists with knowledge and experience in diagnostic radiology physics and radiation safety to join our expanding team of Clinical Scientists and Technologists.

Working within a large regional service, you play a role in the development and delivery of radiation safety/diagnostic radiology physics services to a wide range of NHS Trusts and private customers across the North of England.

Main duties of the job

DRQA post: Assist in the development and delivery of diagnostic radiology physics services to users of ionising radiation across the North of England.

Radiation Safety post: Support the delivery of radiation safety advice under direction Radiation/laser/UV Safety advisors.

For both posts you will also contribute to the department's extensive teaching programme, which includes the delivery of the educational component of the Newcastle Modernising Scientific Careers Scientific Training Programme in Medical Physics. The posts involve travel to other hospitals across the region where services are delivered so a current full driving licence and a willingness to drive is essential.

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject
  • Appropriate post-graduate degree at master's level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge and experience
  • The post holder is expected to be a registered Clinical Scientist or working towards registration
  • Possession of full driving licence

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in radiation safety or diagnostic radiology physics
  • Experience of using radiation measuring equipment
  • Experience of carrying out radiation safety surveys and audits
  • Highly specialist in-depth knowledge and understanding of current legislation and regulations pertinent to working area and the protection of staff, patients and members of the public
  • Knowledge of legislation, standards and safety principles relating to the relevant area
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to the area of work
  • Basic knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control
  • Advanced knowledge of working area, enabling post-holder to advise on the appropriateness of techniques, and to collaborate with clinicians in their interpretation and reporting Advanced knowledge of diagnostic radiology physics
  • Good knowledge of radiation safety legislation
  • Knowledge of IT Software packages
  • Knowledge of equipment quality assurance
