Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team of Healthcare Scientists working in the Clinical Measurement and Engineering Unit of Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. This role involves working clinically with a range of teams in multiple specialties (ophthalmology, orthopaedics, anaesthetics) and consequently we're looking for a highly motivated person with excellent clinical, scientific and communication skills.

The role is based between two clinical services, visual electrodiagnostics (VED) and intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). The post-holder will perform VED tests on patients in an outpatient environment and report these investigations clinically. Separately,they will also deliver intraoperative neuromonitoring for patients undergoing spinal surgery.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be responsible for performing and reporting visual electrodiagnostic investigations such as visual evoked potentials and electroretinograms. For intraoperative neuromonitoring, we use multimodal techniques including somatosensory evoked potentials and transcranial motor evoked potentials. Training in some of these aspects of the role is expected to be required. Additionally, the post-holder will support service leads by reviewing referrals, and developing and maintaining procedures in the Department's quality system as we are seeking accreditation with the IQIPS scheme.

The ideal candidate will have completed the scientist training programme in neurophysiology, ophthalmic and vision science or clinical engineering. They will have experience of delivering clinical services and research and development projects, a good knowledge of anatomy, physiology and statistics, and be eager to work in a busy clinic.

A contribution to the Department's wider activities and its research, development and training activities is also encouraged. The post-holder is expected to hold, or to work towards and achieve, relevant professional registration, usually as a Clinical Scientist. Consequently, experience of physiological measurement, excellent patient handling and inter-personal skills, and an enthusiasm to extend one's knowledge and skills, are essential.
