Job summary

As the Head of Engineering you will be responsible to the Assistant Director of Estates (Operation & Maintenance) for the leadership of the Estate Engineering Workshops and delivery of all elements of hard FM for one of the Trust's Acute sites, ensuring that the Estate is maintained in a safe and suitable condition to support the patient experience.

The first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a Climate Emergency, you will also be key in supporting the Trust's objective to reach Carbon Net Zero by 2030 through the delivery of site specific Estates decarbonisation plans in line with the NHS Net Zero Carbon Delivery Plan.

As a senior leader within the Directorate you will be expected to work across various teams / sites and act as a champion for the Directorates Quality Management Systems driving continual improvement throughout the organisation in order to improve the resilience and quality of service delivered.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will lead a team of Estates professionals, including directly employed labour and specialist appointed contractors, in the safe / efficient delivery of all elements of Hard FM services across the Trust Estate in support of patient care ensuring that compliance with statutory requirements and best practice is achieved at all times.

You will actively support the development and delivery of the Estates strategy including the production of site specific 1 to 5 year development plans covering the development of Estates infrastructure, to support the clinical services, and the management of the Estate backlog maintenance.

You will be responsible for driving forwards the Trusts ambition to be a Net Zero in Operation Estate by 2030 through the development of site-specific technical proposals for the decarbonisation of the Estate and working with the Clinical teams through the delivery of the associated projects.

As the Head of Engineering for a site the post holder will provide expert advice on engineering matters and managing various OpEx and CapEx projects across the Trust Estate.

As part of an 'Outstanding' organisation the successful candidate will champion a culture of continual improvement across the Estates function ensuring that the Plan, Do, Study, Act methodology is embedded within the Operational Workshops to drive continual improvement.

  • To ensure that Estates infrastructure risks are proactively identified, reported, mitigated and managed in line with the Trust risk management policy.
  • To work with the other Heads of Engineering & Building to ensure there is a common methodology for the delivery of service implemented across the organisation in line with the agreed service level agreement.
  • To be responsible for various Estates related policies and procedures such as standard operating procedures, safe systems of work and maintenance policies.
  • To work with the Capital Delivery Team to ensure that all projects are delivered in an efficient manner minimising the impact on Trust operations whilst ensuring that compliance with all statutory requirements and best practice is complied with.
  • To attend / chair meetings focussed on performance, compliance and operational delivery.
  • To participate in the Estates out of hours on-call senior manager service.
  • To ensure that suitable 24 hour cover for is provided to manage site services and provide an immediate emergency response.
  • To deputise for the Deputy Director of Estates (Operations and Maintenance) as required.
  • To act as the designated responsible officer to ensure that there are suitable Business continuity and Emergency Plans are in place so that patient safety is never compromised by the failure of engineering services or availability of suitably trained / competent persons.
  • To liaise with third party organisations such as the Department of Health, NHS Estates, Building Control, The Environment Agency etc.
  • To support other Directorates across the Organisation as part of the Business Planning process through the provision of expert engineering advice, including the provision of feasibility proposals and costed work estimates.
  • To manage a process of audit and reporting to provide the organisation with assurance that the required level of service is being delivered.

  • Extensive post qualification experience and specialist knowledge of engineering services in large complex facilities / Estates
