Job summary

The Private Patient service is responsible for managing non NHS referrals to the Trust, whether from UK or abroad, providing information about how to access our services, potential costs and recovering associated income. The team support a diverse range of patients to access the excellent services offered at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The role spans administration and finance functions and includes liaising between patients, consultants, Embassies, Finance team and insurance providers. Patient contact will be mainly be email and phone, however there may be opportunities for face to face contact in our private outpatient clinic.

As our service expands we are looking for a person who is accurate has strong organisational and communication skills. You should adaptable, enjoy a challenge in a multi-tasking role, have experience with Excel, Outlook and Word and enjoy speaking to our multi-cultural client base.

We are looking for someone who is engaging, to join our team to support the organisation's expansion of private healthcare nationally and internationally and contributes to the financial wellbeing of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the role is to support patients to access private healthcare and to support staff/the Trust to deliver it. The post holder will be key in supporting the Trust's strategy for increasing access to patient centric private care.

The Private Patient team, ensure all income is recovered for the Trust from private work and this requires in depth review of the patient record and applying charges. We use a system called Compucare which is interfaced with the Trust's eRecord system. For international patients we work closely with the clinical team making sure the medical reports are produced and sent on time and secure the relevant Letters of Guarantee.

As the service provision increases across the Trust the team are key in supporting the consultant in the theatre and bed booking process.

  • Manage the invoicing, income and activity pertaining to Private, Overseas and NHS chargeable patients in a timely and efficient manner where ever a non-NHS patient may access the Trust.

- Ensure Private and International patients, Health Tourists and failed Asylum Seekers receive appropriate information re costs and where needed are interviewed to establish their status where appropriate

- Ensure maximum recovery of all income due to the Trust across all sites

- Raise Notification of Debt forms to meet the Trusts targets

  • To support the provision of an efficient and effective administration and clerical service within Private and International Patient Department including verbal and written communication, welcoming customers as required, answering telephone, taking payment (cash, cheque, bankers draft, debit and credit card payments) giving receipts, booking theatre and bed as necessary..
  • Ensure case notes, results and GP referrals are available as required
  • To effectively allocate appointments or theatre space for Private and International patients ensuring theatre space is utilised to its maximum capacity.
  • Process S2 forms or European Health Insurance Cards for all EEA nationals who elect to come to the UK for treatment or take ill whilst visiting UK charging at the appropriate NHS tariff
