Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the lung cancer specialist nursing team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sees approximately 400 people per year who are newly diagnosed with lung cancer and mesothelioma and the team are committed to providing high quality care.
The team at the RVI consists of 5 chest physicians, two lung cancer nurse specialist and a cancer care coordinator. We work very closely with the lung cancer team at the Freeman Hospital too, providing cross over cover as needed.
To ensure the best possible outcomes for patients affected by lung cancer and mesothelioma, a multidisciplinary approach is required. People with lung cancer have complex needs requiring input from primary and secondary care including clinicians, specialist palliative care and allied healthcare professionals. The role of the lung cancer nurse will involve supporting patients throughout the pathway, including complex symptoms management, and managing treatment side effect, form pre-diagnosis to survivorship or end of life.

Main duties of the job
- Deliver a high-quality evidence-based service, providing specialist/expert knowledge to all users.
- Act as the patients advocate from pre-diagnosis to survivorship or end of life care.
- To engage with future service developments to ensure a clinically effective lung cancer service in line with current and future Department of Health reports, the Modernisation Agenda and Cancer Standards.
- To facilitate nurse led service including nurse led clinics, vigilance and rescue calls.
- To act as a facilitator and educator within lung cancer nursing, developing, and maintaining clinical excellence by regular contact with patients and families.
- Organise and prioritise the designated workload in relation to identified needs.
- Communicate effectively with appropriate teams to ensure safe and effective transition of patients care between services relevant information shared.
- Participates in data collection for service delivery, audit and quality surveillance.
