Job description

Job responsibilities

You will have time at the interview to look at the full list of vacancies in Cardiothoracic Theatres and the Emergency Department.

Please note that we are unable to offer alternative interview dates so candidates should make every effort to be available for the interview date shown on the current advert.

Overseas Staff need to be on the NMC register with OSCE completed and passed and have a current UK Visa

Current vacancies

We currently have staff nurse and ODP roles available within the Cardiothoracic Centre and Emergency Department for candidates with experience.

Cardiothoracic Centre

The Freeman Hospitals Cardiothoracic Centre is a highly performing surgical and transplant centre, greatly acclaimed for its innovative, research orientated approach to treating patients with life-threatening heart and lung conditions. We are seeking qualified scrub nurses and operating department practitioners with cardiothoracic experience, to join our dynamic team. Our theatre nurses and operating department practitioners are vital to the smooth running of our surgical environment, true team players with excellent communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills. Cardiothoracic surgery can be unpredictable, as every patient we care for has their own individual complex needs. The ability to work flexibly, effectively and efficiently as part of a large supportive, multi-professional team are the attributes and aptitudes we are looking for.

Our theatres are made up of four adult Cardiac and Thoracic theatres (including robotic surgery) and one paediatric / congenital theatre. Emergency situations requiring urgent attendance can arise, and our nursing teams are regularly called upon to support other departments in critical situations. We provide a 24/7 service and so commitments include night shifts, on calls and scrub staff will train to become part of Newcastles Cardiothoracic National Organ retrieval team.

Emergency Department

Emergency nursing demands a unique set of skills. Trauma patients conditions can be complex and life threatening, requiring emergency specialists to quickly stabilise them, minimising pain and discomfort, and our nurses are often evaluating and treating patients at the same time, whilst working with colleagues from other departments to ensure the patient receives the highest quality care.

You need to be able to adapt, think out of the box and remain calm under pressure during rapidly changing situations whilst remaining compassionate and caring at all times as patients are often very scared, with needs which may not be apparent when they first arrive. Our nurses oversee non-trauma admissions and have continuous contact with their patients making decisions that align with hospital protocols and clinical orders so excellent communication and clinical skills are a must.

All new staff jointing the team undergo a local induction, working closely with our Clinical Educator. Once you have completed the induction and all the necessary competencies you will manage a specific patient group, rotating through all areas of the Major Traumas area and become more autonomous in your role.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.
