We are seeking a motivated innovative individual trained in the provision of cleft lip and palate surgery with an additional interest in paediatric laser surgery and a skill set and experience that enables them to provide an opinion on all aspects of paediatric and adult plastic surgery. Interest in research development will be supported if the candidate desires. We anticipate the individual will have skills and experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver complex surgery, with a commitment to service development and improving the patient experience. There is an expectation the successful candidate would join the regional burns centre on-call roster for out of hours work.
We expect the trust to continue investing in digital technology and welcome interest in this area in relation to reconstructive practice.
The Newcastle Cleft service has an outstanding record of achievement nationally. The successful individual will need to be able to demonstrate experience of working in the UK cleft community with evidence of presentation at national and international level of cleft related research and service developments.
Main duties of the job
Clinical:
- Integrate into multi-disciplinary teams across the trust to provide world class cleft services.
- Provide all aspects of primary and secondary cleft care, including primary lip and palate surgery, alveolar bone grafting and secondary adult surgery.
- Develop and support areas of practice such as paediatric laser surgery.
- Support and advise on any aspect of paediatric plastic surgery
- Join the on-call rota for burns with expertise to support the Newcastle Burns Centre
Administrative:
- Maintain a clinical activity log.
Research:
- Build relationships with regional centres of education.
- The Newcastle Cleft Service supports one NIHR(international) and 3 NIH(UK) research projects as well as leading the UK group developing imaging tools and assessments systems for the evaluation of facial appearance. The post-holder will be expected to have experience in these areas and to develop this work. Previous experience in these areas is valuable. A postgraduate research qualification is not essential.
Teaching:
- Actively engage in regional teaching programmes.
- Mentor trainees and undergraduates interested in careers in plastic surgery.
