Job summary

We have an exciting Band 6 opportunity in Children's Theatre within the Royal Victoria Infirmary for a dynamic, motivated, enthusiastic and forward thinking individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who has a flexible attitude and approach.

You will be part of a highly specialised department supported by a Matron Band 7 and other senior staff. This is a uniquepostwhere you will be part of a team, which offers a supportive, friendly and encouraging work environment with excellent opportunities for development.

Thesuccessful postholder will possess the ability to work autonomously, as well as embracing multi-disciplinary team working to support the care of children in Children's Theatres, as well as Adult Theatres when required. The Theatre Suite consist of 6 theatres covering many different specialities such as ENT, Plastics, General Surgery, Urology, Oncology, Transplant and a 24 hour emergency service.

You will need to be a highly organised individual who can lead a team ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and care are maintained. The teaching and developing of junior colleagues will be an important part of your role; therefore, it is important that you be in possession of a relevant teaching certificate. Acting as a role model within your team the wider department and as an ambassador for our organisation will be an expectation.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure all staff within Theatre / Department are kept fully appraised of all the governance indicators relating to their Theatre and Department and participate in bringing about improvements where necessary.
  • Communicates with patients, carers and the wider multi-disciplinary team and in so doing, acknowledges / accommodates barriers to communication and understanding including speech, hearing, language and emotions.
  • A specific part of the role is to lead the weekend 8.30 am team brief with the consultant anaesthetist & co-ordinate the activity by liaising with all specialty surgeons, anaesthetists and staff.
  • The Team Leader will be expected to make decisions and organise staff into the specific areas where the work is required.
  • To liaise with surgical teams during discussions regarding priority p The Team Leader will be expected to ensure that Consultants are identified and encouraged to discuss patient priority procedures with each other and the Anaesthetist.
  • Use the time during no activity to ensure staff stock and clean theatres and surrounding areas to ensure theatres maintain high standards of cleanliness and are fully prepared at all times to receive patients for surgery.
  • Co-ordinate the out of hour's theatre workload to ensure that procedures take place in a safe environment maintaining patient dignity and respect at all times.

This role involves being able to manage equipment, repairs, stock, ordering and report faults. As a major trauma centre, it is important to have an insight into emergency preparedness such as major incident, business continuity, operational resilience, evacuation planning and infectious diseases. Willing to take part in audit, risk assessments and clinical supervision. Also to be prepared to take on any additional training required for the role such as DATIX, allocate health roster etc

  • Ensure that quality indicators (CAT / Safety Thermometer) returns for Theatre / Department are completed monthly.
  • Attends Directorate Sisters / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP meetings and Trust wide Sisters / Charge Nurse / ODP Forums.
  • The Team Leader is responsible for ensuring all theatre data collection forms are accurately completed.
  • The Team Leader is responsible for ensuring that staff fully comply with the requirements of tray tracking of instruments.
  • Advise and support junior members of staff.
  • Use down time to facilitate staff training & education by using the time productively such as ensuring staff actively use time for mandatory training.
  • To be proactive & make decisions when extra staff may be required to be called in to support activity.
  • Assesses complex issues and facilitates decision making relating to patient care, safety treatment options and outcomes, and supervises others in doing this.
  • Receives and delivers confidential and sensitive information which will be complex and sensitive (e.g. child protection or adult safeguarding)
