Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team for 1 year. The post is to provide cover for a consultant who is currently off work.

You will provide an expert opinion on, and investigate and manage, those patients presenting to the Department of Vascular Surgery in Newcastle.

You will be contributing to the management, development and delivery of the vascular service and will be responsible for patient care within this department.

Management of vascular patients will involve open, endovascular and endovenous techniques, involving close MDT team working to ensure the best outcomes possible for the people of the North East of England referred for a vascular opinion.

You will be expected to take an active role in education and/or clinical governance at specialty level. You will be expected to be an educational supervisor and to contribute to the training of juniors of all levels. You will be expected to take a lead role in the induction and management of the vascular Foundation Team.

It is favourable if the successful candidate has a track record of research activity (including publications/presentations), with a view to further enhancing the national profile of this unit.

Main duties of the job

To provide expert opinion, investigation and management for vascular patients from Newcastle, Gateshead and Northumbria to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Primarily you will be contributing to the management, delivery and development of the vascular service in Newcastle hospitals and surrounding trusts. You will be responsible for patient care within this department. As a nationally recognised centre of vascular excellence in the UK, we would expect the successful candidate to lead and develop a subspecialty area, to continue to enhance the national profile of Newcastle Hospitals. We anticipate that successful candidates will have the necessary skills to drive forward our hybrid theatre endovascular capability and the delivery of first-class vascular care. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to take on leading roles in education and/or clinical governance. We expect the successful candidate to be an innovator, with exceptional leadership skills, a track record of successful collaboration and team working, together with a proven ability to deliver service innovation and quality improvement.

You will participate in a 1:10 surgeon-of-the-week rota, enabling frontline senior decision making and supporting patient flow.
