Job summary

The Assistant Director for Business Strategy and Planning is key senior role within the wider Business, Development & Enterprise Directorate. The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a varied portfolio which covers there main areas: co-ordination of the annual planning process, monitoring of progress against the current Trust strategy and leading the development of a revised Trust strategy, and continued development of the Trust business case and business planning processes.

The post holder will have a successful track record at a senior management level, have excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills, and also be able to work with a high degree of autonomy, managing multiple projects to tight deadlines.

Main duties of the job

  • Supports Deputy Director Business, Development & Enterprise in developing and leading a robust annual business cycle which has clear and easily adhered to processes and timetable to help drive business throughout the
  • Leads on the development of the organisation's Annual Plan for submission to the ICP/ICS/NHSI as appropriate.
  • Leads on development of the organisation's strategic plan which should achieve the ICP/ICS/NHSI's requirements but also exceed these by describing a compelling clinical vision for services and a cogent plan to ensure Trust wide awareness and delivery
  • Leads on maximising opportunities offered by service procurements and AQP including:
    • Developing framework for assessing which procurements we provide in the context of the Trust strategic objectives.
    • Undertaking market scanning and market analysis to identify new business
  • Work with individual clinical directorates to develop their strategies in line with the Trust's strategy. This will include provision and/or co-ordination of any necessary templates or supporting information
  • Leads on monitoring achievement against the Trust and Directorate's strategy including removing barriers to progress where appropriate.

  • Degree level education supplemented by post graduate study and management or clinical experience to Master's Degree level or equivalent.

Knoowledge and Experience

  • Successful track record at a senior management level in a complex NHS environment for an extensive period
  • Previous operational experience at directorate manager level or equivalent.
  • Highly developed understanding of health service issues.
  • In depth knowledge of the NHS, Long Term Plan, legislation and policy, current and future context, issues and impact on service development and delivery.
  • Experience of strategy development and implementation
  • Good knowledge of NHS information systems, data sources and benchmarking techniques
  • Sound theoretical and practical understanding of project management processes, procedures and skills
