Applications are invited for 3 Band 5 Genetic Technologist posts in the Newcastle Genetics Laboratory.
Applicants should have a degree in a relevant biological or biomedical subject, or equivalent laboratory experience. Applicants should have a mature attitude and an appreciation of the importance of genetic testing to patients and their families.
The successful applicants will support Clinical Scientists and Genetic Technologists in delivering genetic testing for a range of inherited and acquired conditions.
The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory forms part of the Northeast and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub, alongside our partners in Leeds and Sheffield.

Main duties of the job
We provide testing for a wide variety of inherited and acquired conditions for a local population of over three million people, as well as services provided for the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub. In addition we provide specialised services to patients throughout the UK and internationally. The Newcastle Genetics laboratory is housed in purpose built accommodation at the Institute of Genetic Medicine close to Newcastle city centre, and has a close association with the high profile academic groups working in the Institute of Genetic Medicine research laboratories.
The successful candidates will be a motivated and reliable individual and will join a team of around 90 Scientific and Technical staff.
They will work within the technical team to deliver the laboratory testing for a wide range of genetic conditions, and will be required to liaise closely with the clinical scientist team.

The role involves processing of samples referred for a broad range of molecular genetics and cytogenetic tests in addition to carrying out other routine technical duties. Good communication, team working, and organisational skills are essential.
The laboratory has a close association with the Clinical Genetics and Muscle Immunoanalytical sections of the department, and also with the high-profile academic groups working in the Institute of Genetic Medicine Research Laboratories.
Job Purpose
- Acceptance and logging of samples into the laboratory, and extraction of DNA from those samples according to well defined protocols.
- Carrying out straightforward genetic laboratory tests guided by clearly defined policies and procedures under the supervision of a clinical scientist. Reporting of laboratory results to the supervising scientist.
- Carrying out routine housekeeping duties within the genetics laboratory under the direction of the senior technician.
- Limited responsibility for an additional component of the genetics service such as the operation of a specific item of equipment or a specific complex housekeeping task.
