Job summary

The Imaging Physics & Radiation Safety Unit of the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate is looking for a registered clinical scientist with experience in both diagnostic radiology (DR) physics and radiation safety. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of clinical scientists & technologists providing Quality Assurance of X-ray equipment around the region, along with support to both Radiation Protection Advisers & Medical Physics Experts within the Unit.

Applicants should have an honours degree in physics, or other appropriate subject, plus an appropriate post-graduate degree at master's level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge and experience; be registered (or expecting registration within the next four months) as a clinical scientist; and have knowledge and experience of both X-ray quality assurance and radiation safety audit. A current UK driving licence is essential as the post involves regular visits to other sites across Cumbria and the north east of England. Applicants who have appropriate experience but are some way from registration as a clinical scientist may be appointable at Band 6 pending registration. In such cases it is anticipated that registration will be attained within 2 years of appointment.

Main duties of the job

  • Will provide scientific advice and assistance to clinical users of diagnostic radiology X-ray systems including writing and checking scientific and technical reports on equipment performance
  • Will also contribute to the department's extensive teaching programme which includes delivery of the educational component of the Newcastle Modernising Scientific Careers Scientific Training Programme in Medical Physics
  • Assist in development and delivery of a regional clinical technical service (Diagnostic Radiology Physics) in conjunction with the relevant Heads of Unit/Service
  • Communicate with users of the clinical technical service including senior clinical staff and managers
  • Provide scientific advice and assistance to clinical users of x-ray equipment
  • Participate in service related research and development projects Report research findings in scientific papers and formal presentations at local, national and occasionally international meetings
  • Write and check scientific and technical reports on equipment performance and safety
  • Ensure safety of patients, staff and members of the public in relation to the performance of x-ray equipment
  • Provide support to safety advisers within the department to assist service users in maintaining their compliance with national legislation & guidelines
  • Contribute to the teaching and training of staff including STP trainees, junior scientific and technical staff as well as users of the service
