Job summary

The Mental Health Act is complex and interesting. Understanding those complexities and maintaining an interest are both key to the success of the role and to ensuring the Trust receives a service that delivers and is responsive not only to service demands but also to changes in legislation.

The Mental Health Act Office undertakes to deliver a service that ensures the Trusts compliance with the legalities of both the Act itself and the Code of Practice. Under the direction of the Senior Mental Health Act Administrator and direct management of the Deputy to the above, the Mental Health Act Administrator is expected to provide a professional, efficient and seamless service to the Trust in accordance with the requirements of the Act.

The success of the role, and the performance of the central Mental Health Act Office, is dependent on the MHA Administrators success in establishing working partnerships with both internal and external bodies, this is an essential element of the role which necessitates communication in matters of both a sensitive and significant nature.

Main duties of the job

Job Description Summary (Main duties and responsibilities)

To support the delivery of the objectives within the Mental Health Act (MHA) Annual Work Plan including:

  • Provision of the delivery of the MHA service in accordance with procedural and legislative requirements with minimal supervision.
  • To undertake duties consummate with the role as delegated within the Trust Scheme of Delegation, namely:
  • The receipt and scrutiny of statutory forms, and arranging rectification in accordance with legislative requirements.
  • Providing or seeking advice on points of legislation.
  • Ensuring reporting requirements are met in accordance with legal and organisational requirements.
  • Providing administrative support to the bodies with responsibility for patient hearings.
  • Maintaining flagging systems in place to support clinical staff in meeting their legislative requirements using an excel based system.
  • Maintaining patient records, both in paper and electronic format, ensuring they are accessible and current.
  • To work closely with all staff to ensure local and national requirements are met.
  • Ensure incident reports are completed and lessons learnt are shared within the Department where appropriate.
  • To liaise with external organisations within areas of responsibility.
