Peer Support Worker - Homeless Team

Job summary

The role of Peer Support Worker has been developed to specifically utilise the skills of people who have lived experience of having received Secondary Care Mental Health services. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences, Peer Support Workers will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others.

The role requires occasional street outreach to people rough sleeping, alongside the Council housing outreach teams. This sometimes involves significant walking, working in inclement weather, and often in challenging environments and some limited out of hours working (6am start) on a rota basis. Applicants must be prepared to undertake required duties as part of the HMHS.

To offer support and guidance to Service users experiencing mental health problems impacting on their life and well being. To offer companionship, understanding and establishing a caring, professional relationship to improve individuals socialisation and psychological resilience for those service users with a chronic illness or those needing support in recovery.

Operating from various locations and some home working. The core working pattern is Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. Work may dictate some occasional out of hours working (enhancements paid).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will offer support and guidance to Service users experiencing mental health problems impacting on their life and well being,offeringcompanionship, understanding and establishing a caring, professional relationship to improve individuals socialisation and psychological resilience for those service users with a chronic illness or those needing support in recovery.

The team is an active partner within the wider multi-agency statutory & voluntary sector homeless services within Leicester City, and as such the successful applicant would be expected to help facilitate this partnership, as well as assisting to develop the service and similar partnerships across the wider counties of Leicestershire & Rutland.

Going forward as the service develops across the wider counties of Leicestershire & Rutland the work will involve some working in County districts which will be developed around existing staff locations.

In addition to

  • Establishing supportive, positive and respectful relationships with all people you come in contact with.
  • Providingpeer support, maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Helping people identify recovery goals themselves.
  • Supporting service users to identify and overcome fears within a relationship of empathy and trust.
  • Undertakingappropriate administrative duties for delivering effective and timely care, including updating patient records.
