Job summary

A rewarding opportunity has arisen for a Registered Childrens Nurse with a Paediatric Oncology Course or, equivalent experience and a willingness to undertake a specialist Paediatric Oncology Qualification to work within the Diana Childrens Community Service as part of the Macmillan nursing provision, covering Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland.

You will work as an autonomous practitioner in assessing, planning, implementing & evaluating specialist nursing care for a designated case-load of children/ young people in differing environments with varied resources.

You will be a clinical expert on childhood cancers, palliative and terminal care for children/ young people, their family and other multi-professionals, interagency teams in the hospital and in the community.

You will be actively involved in the strategic and operational development of childrens oncology services within the Regional Cancer Network, Childrens Macmillan Service and the Diana Childrens Community Service.

You will be expected to facilitate empowerment and partnership working with children/ young people and their families and multi-agency services

You will be the advocate for the child/ young person and their family.

As part of this role you will be expected to co-ordinate the provision of appropriately managed packages of care for terminally ill children/ young people in hospital and community by being involved with 24/7 on-call system.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be based in the Diana Community Childrens Service and will work collaboratively with colleagues in the multidisciplinary oncology team at Regional Oncology Treatment Centres to coordinate the care for children and young people with cancer.

  • To work collaboratively informing and educating those working in the Diana Service who provides additional support alongside Macmillan for these children and families; as well as Primary Care, Education, Social Services and the Voluntary Sector.
  • Maintain close contacts with identified children and young people on the caseload by visiting them at home and in hospital to ensure continuity of care across all settings that the child visits.
  • Expand knowledge and practice in the field of oncology to ensure care is responsive to childs needs.
  • Experience equivalent to and or completion of a Paediatric Oncology Course.
  • Attend weekly MDT meetings in UHL and weekly liaise with other referral centres.
  • Act as a resource for paediatric palliative care in the hospital and community.
  • Working alongside members of the MDT promoting and advising on good practice, facilitating empowerment and partnership working. Be competent in the safe use of central lines and the administration of chemotherapy.
  • Contribute to the training and education for other health professionals and carers.
  • Attend and support all essential training as specified by the Diana Service to maintain own and others clinical competence / peer assessment / LCAT.
